What it says

“This week Tuesday Mr. John Kuchenmeister another of our old pioneers died of catarrhal consumption. He was in his 79th year and had always been very active in life. He was born in Wurtzburg, Germany, and there married. He removed to Minnesota about 38 years ago and pre-empted the farm where he died. He leaves a wife who is one year his junior, and four children. His family has always been one of our best. He was buried this morning from St. Peter’s church of which he was a faithful member. We tender our sympathy to the bereaved and point them to the lowly Nazarene who endured the cross and suffered death that we might be free.” (A paragraph on death follows.)
“In his 79th year” puts his birth between March 1817 and March 1818, close to the Ancestry tree’s 18
Aug 1818 (which would make it his 78th); the other Delano paper’s notice, the next day, gives “age
73 years” (newspaper-delano-1891-1901-kuchenmeister). About 38 years in Minnesota puts his arrival
about 1858.
