What it says

The first page of a letter to Othniel C. Marsh, the Yale palaeontologist, which the tree that posted it describes as “Letter to Prof O. C. Marsh. Finds Brontotherium.” Seen 11 Oct 2026 as screenshots of the page in the Ancestry viewer (two copies); the signature is on a later page not seen here. The spelling is the writer’s.

At the head, in other hands: “No 1,” and “704” boxed, “12048. Tert. Cat.” (a Tertiary catalogue number).

“Craw Bute, eight miles East of Red Cloud agency, March 13th 1875. Proff O. C. Marsh, Yale Collage, New Haven, Cann. Dear Sir, After a long hard winter I have got around. We have bin snow in on the Neibrie River South East of Spotted Tail agency, my selfe, my Brother and Shelly [?] and two hired men. We did not do any thing un till the 22nd, twenty second, of Feb 1875. Then we mooved over neare Spotted Tail on White River. Thare begun bisness the first …”

The tree attaches it to Henry Clay Clifford, who died at Gordon, Sheridan County, Nebraska, in 1906, not far from the old Red Cloud and Spotted Tail agencies. Who wrote it rests on the signature, not seen here.
