What it says
Found on Find a Grave, 10 Oct 2026: two photographs, the whole monument (a marble obelisk
with an urn, a stone chapel behind it) and its inscribed panel, from the memorial of “Mary Lyall
Jeffrey” at Little Lake Cemetery, Peterborough (138158851; panel photographed by Mardelle Monroe,
2026; the memorial’s other details are in findagrave-jeffrey-family). The panel reads:
SACRED / TO THE MEMORY OF / MARY LYALL / WIFE OF / WILLIAM JEFFREY / aged 83 years. / ISABELLA HALL / DAU OF / ADAM & CATHARINE / HALL / DIED JUNE 16 1922 / AGED 85 YEARS
“Aged 83 years” is in script, and no death date for Mary is on this face; Find a Grave has 6 May 1857, WikiTree 26 May 1857, from Skinner. The other faces are not in the photographs. (First read here as 1872; the figures, enlarged, are 1922.)
What it shows:
- Mary Lyall was the wife of William Jeffrey, as the family accounts say, and lived to 83. That fits the 4 May 1774 of her Find a Grave memorial (WikiTree has 4 May 1773, at Chirnside).
- No “Edna.” The stone calls her Mary Lyall, which supports dropping the “Mary Edna” of WikiTree and FamilySearch.
- Isabella Hall (1836/7-1922), daughter of Adam and Catharine Hall, shares the face. She was the
daughter of Adam Hall and Catharine Jeffrey (
findagrave-jeffrey-family). - It is the Hall family’s monument. The photographs on Catharine (Jeffrey) Hall’s memorial at the same cemetery show an obelisk with an urn and an oval panel on its pedestal, by the same contributor, that is very probably this one; that face reads “In memoriam of Adam Hall, died Oct. 4, 1881, aged 77 years; also Catharine Jeffrey, wife of the above, died Feb. 26, 1882, aged 75 years.” So Mary Lyall, widow of William Jeffrey, is commemorated with her daughter Catharine, Catharine’s husband and their daughter, at Peterborough, where she very probably spent her widowhood with the Halls. A note on William Jeffrey’s Find a Grave memorial says there is no evidence he is buried here.
The stone says nothing of Mary Jeffrey (Mrs. John Short), so it is direct evidence for Mary Lyall, William Jeffrey and their daughter Catharine (Mrs. Adam Hall), and only through the family accounts and the family’s names for them as Mary Jeffrey’s parents.
