What it says
Two boulders on the Freeman homestead at Sandwich, one shaped like a saddle and one like a pillion, said by tradition to mark the graves of Edmund Freeman (d. 1682) and his wife Elizabeth (d. 14 Feb 1675/6). Descendants placed bronze tablets on them on 22 Aug 1910. Edmund’s tablet reads “Born in England 1590,” a date taken from Frederick Freeman’s Freeman Genealogy (1875); the Pulborough register shows his baptism on 25 July 1596. Elizabeth’s reads “Born in England 1600.”
The story of the stones is tradition (Freeman Genealogy pp. 18-20; Otis). The tablets themselves date only from 1910.
