Elizabeth Freeman

Also Mrs. Elizabeth Freeman · Elisabetha Raymer?

Second wife of Edmund Freeman of Sandwich, whom she probably married at Shipley, Sussex, in 1632, and stepmother of Elizabeth (Freeman) Ellis; she came over with them on the Abigail in 1635, aged 35. She died at Sandwich in 1675/6 and by tradition lies under the pillion stone of the Saddle and Pillion. Possibly the mother of Mary (Freeman) Perry; her maiden name is unknown.

Notes

Second wife of Edmund Freeman of Sandwich; “vxor Elizabeth Freeman 35” on the Abigail in 1635. In 1651 “Edmond Freeman, Senir, and his wife” were presented for not attending public worship. Tradition (Otis 1861; Freeman 1875) has Edmund choose a pillion-shaped stone for her grave, hauled “by oxen driven by Ellis,” his grandson Matthias.

On 13 June 1660: “Wiliam Newland testifyed in the Court, that a message was brought or sent to him by one from Elizabeth Freeman, that affeirmed that Jacob Burgis was drawne to testify that which hee did conserning Barlow, by Beniamine Nye, by feare, as threatened that incase hee would not attend Barlow in his occations against the Quakers, and soe to giue the present euidence, hee should not haue his daughter to wife” (PCR 3:191). Which Elizabeth Freeman is not stated; Edmund’s wife is the likeliest (the research’s inference).

Open questions

  • Her maiden name. Probably the “Elisabetha Raymer” whom “Edmundus Freiman” married at Shipley, Sussex, 10 Aug 1632, but that is not proven. Brainard (TAG 17, 1940) and Dawes-Gates proposed a widow Perry, which would make Edward Perry her son. Most compilers leave the name open.
  • Was she the mother of Mary, wife of Edward Perry? See people/mary-freeman-1636.md.
