What it says
Found by Dasloops on Ancestry, 27 Sep 2026. Polk’s directories put a widow’s late husband in parentheses as “(wid …).”
- 1918: “Holbrook Harriet P (wid Richd B) r 560 Mercer”; “Richd B (Jessie L) master mariner h 560 Mercer”; “Richd C r 560 Mercer.”
- 1919: “Richd B (Jessie C) master mariner h 560 Mercer.” Harriet is gone.
- 1920: “Jessie Mrs h 560 Mercer.” No Richard B., and no “wid.”
- 1922: “Holbrook D Philip seamn r560 Mercer”; “Jessie Mrs lndrs r225 N Bway”; “Richd seamn str Comanche.” Still no “wid.”
- 1924: no Jessie, Philip or Richard.
- 1925: “Jessie (wid Richd D) h560 Mercer” (“D” a misprint for B); “Philip D driver”; “Richd C mariner.”

No 1921 or 1923 directory checked yet.
The 1919, 1920 and 1922 pages were supplied on 7 Oct 2026 (Ancestry images 1919, 1920, 1922). Read from the images:
- 1919 (p. 933 [?]): “Holbrook … Richd B (Jessie C) master mariner h 560 Mercer.”
- 1920 (p. 951): “Jessie Mrs h 560 Mercer.” No Richard.
- 1922 (p. 781): “Holbrook D Philip seamn r560 Mercer”; “Jessie Mrs lndrs r225 N Bway” (a laundress, rooming); “Richd seamn str Comanche.” Philip still lived at 560 Mercer.
Also on these pages, and probably another family: “Jos R (Maude L) h 4303 8th av NE” (1919); “Maud Mrs h 4023 12th av NE,” the address of Rev. John A. Holbrook (1920); “Maud L clk Natl City Co r4706 20th av NE” (1922). A Maud Holbrook in Seattle, married to a Joseph R. Holbrook in 1919, is not Richard’s Maud on her name alone, but she should be ruled out. She was very likely Maud L. Leonhardt, who married C. Ray Holbrook in Clark County, Washington, in 1913 (Washington State Digital Archives, marriage index; searched 8 Oct 2026).
