Notes
Jessie’s elder surviving son, a seaman. In his parents’ household in Kitsap County, Washington, in 1910, and with his mother on Mercer Street in 1920. In the Seattle directories at 560 Mercer Street: “D Philip seamn” in 1922, “Philip D driver” in 1925, “D Philip mariner” in 1926. Witnessed his mother’s marriage to Thomas Absalom at Kent in 1928, and is “Phil Holbrook” in the family photograph of about 1930-32.
By the Ancestry tree of a descendant of his uncle Orlando Clifford, he married Erma Evans
(1909-1993), and four sons are listed under him there: Philip T., John F., Dan Lowe and Richard
Clay Holbrook (born 1938 at Sacramento). The tree’s owner, Kathy Jonas, says Dan Lowe was the son
of Alice Duffy (message-kathy-jonas-2026), so which wife was the mother of each son is still to
be checked. Dan Lowe Holbrook posted the family’s story of Richard’s second family in South
Dakota on GenForum in 1998 (online-genforum-holbrook-1998).
Open questions
- His birth record, and when and where he died.
- His marriages: to Alice Catherine Duffy (San Francisco, 1929) and to Erma Evans (by 1938). The 1930 and 1940 censuses would show which wife was with him, and when.
