What it says

Compiled genealogy. Gives John Read’s first record as Weymouth, 1637, calls him constable, and gives his gravestone as “J. R., æt. 87. D. S. 1685” (p. 186). The Rede pedigree (pp. 28-29), from Brianus de Rede through the Bishop of Chichester, is the source of Mollie Pfeiffer’s gentry descent. Reed only “supposed” John was a son of William Read and Lucy Henage (p. 186).

Also used (pp. 186, 234-235):

  • John Read lived “at what was called the Rim, which is now in Seekonk,” and “kept a public-house”; “There is a record that Richard Ponton was ‘put’ to John Read in 1644”; his gravestone was then “standing in Seekonk old burying-yard.” Children include Abigail, baptized at Dorchester in the 10th month of 1638; John, born at Braintree 29 Aug 1640; Thomas, 9 Nov 1641; and twins Ezekiel and Zachariah, who died in infancy.
  • Daniel Read (b. 1655) died 17 Oct 1710, and his son Noah on 20 Oct 1710; his daughter Hannah married Daniel Taft of Mendon on 28 July 1703 (p. 234).
  • Capt. Daniel Read (b. 1680): “He was known as Capt. Read.” His children by Elizabeth Ide, born at Attleborough: “Daniel, born at Attleborough, Dec. 3, 1716”; Noah, 17 Dec 1718; Elizabeth, 2 Apr 1721; Samuel, 18 May 1723 (printed “1823”), died the same year; Abigail, 4 Apr 1725; “Daniel, 1726” (apparently a slip); Rachel, 10 June 1728; Benjamin, 21 Aug 1730; Ebenezer, 1733; Thankful, 12 May 1737 (pp. 234-235).
