What it says

Town history of Chebacco (now Essex), by Rev. Robert Crowell, read in the archive.org full text. Used for:

  • Thomas Low the immigrant settled at Chebacco in 1643 “on land since owned by the late Captain Winthrop Low. His house was about thirty-five rods south of Captain Low’s mansion” (p. 45).
  • The 1677/8 committee (William Cogswell, John Andrews, Thomas Low and William Goodhue) “to confer with the Selectmen” about preaching in Chebacco (p. 74).
  • At the church’s organization in 1683, “the church chose John Burnham, and Thomas Low, deacons” (p. 93); Deacon Low “for several years parish clerk” (p. 119).
  • The 1702 school-house, “on the right hand of the way as you go from the Meeting-house to Dea. Thomas Low’s” (p. 110).
  • Deacon Thomas Low’s will of 1708, “I Thomas Low, of Ipswich … Maltster,” and Crowell’s summary of the widow’s provisions (p. 120); his imagined “visit” to the malt-house in 1712 (pp. 120-122), a reconstruction written as a temperance lesson, not a record.
  • Chaplain John Cleaveland’s journal of 1758: “Lieut. Stephen Low (both of Chebacco) was slain, as we suppose; the last that was seen of him, he was sitting down, with a heavy wound” (pp. 176-183).
  • Major Caleb Low of Danvers “present at the execution of Andre,” with an order signed by Washington, from Hanson’s History of Danvers (p. 226).
  • The Geneva Bible of 1579 owned by Capt. Winthrop Low’s family, inscribed “Susana Low her Book 1677, May 19,” “Thomas Low his Book,” “Samuel Low” and “John Low”; and a bone-headed cane inscribed “Owned in ye Family, Eng’d about 1573: D. L., U. America, March 14, 1803” (pp. 354-355).
  • Rev. John Cleaveland’s Chebacco deaths: “Dec. 30 [1800]. Widow Catherine Low, aged 86” (pp. 465-467).
