What it says
A family association’s bulletin, read in the archive.org full text. Its sketches of “James Bates of Dorchester” give the 1635 Elizabeth list (James, husbandman, 53; Alice, 52; Lyddia, 20; Marie, 17; Margaret, 12; James, 9); freeman 7 Dec 1636; selectman, elder and representative; “Elder James Bates died in 1655 and his wife Alice in 1657.” His will of 22 Nov 1655, with a codicil of 26 Nov, left his lands and goods to “sonne Richard Bate of Lid Towne in Kent in Old England,” £100 each to the three children of his son James, and his Dorchester house, orchard and planting land to his grandson James Foster, his wife Alice to have the use of the house. Roger Clapp testified that Bate wished his daughter Gibson to have £10 “for her own use and not her husband.”
