What it says

Local-history articles by Gordon Harris on the Historic Ipswich website. Compiled from town, court and land records and from earlier genealogies, mostly without citations. Used:

  • “John Proctor of Ipswich” (2025, the link above). In 1647 John Procter Sr. bought a 100-acre farm on Island Road from Thomas Firman. It also says “His first wife, Martha, had died on June 13, 1659. He remarried and left a widow, Martha,” a reading the Low research does not share.
  • “Robert and Hannah Pengry Day of Ipswich, and Some of Their Descendants” (4 July 2025): https://historicipswich.net/2025/07/04/descendants-of-robert-and-hannah-day-of-ipswich/ Lists Hannah (Day) Lord, who married Robert Lord Jr. about 1657, among the children of Robert Day and Hannah (Pengry) Day, and among her children “James Lord (1676 - 1734) married Mary (Haskell) Lord,” with no source for the Haskell name.
  • “The Labor in Vain Farm of Thomas & Elisabeth Emerson of Bishop’s Stortford, England, and Ipswich, Massachusetts” (22 June 2026): https://historicipswich.net/2026/06/22/thomas-elisabeth-emerson/ Calls Thomas Emerson “a baker by trade”; in 1638 Samuel Greenfield sold him “a farm of one hundred and twenty acres previously owned by Humphrey Wise,” running from Turkey Shore to Labor in Vain Creek; and he had six acres at Turkey Shore from Henry Wilkinson. Gives the family tradition of a crossing on the Elizabeth and Ann in 1635.
