Notes

Gen. Solomon Lowe of Boxford, who inherited the homestead under his father’s will of 1803 and was its executor. General of the Second Brigade, Second Division, Massachusetts militia, from September 1820 to April 1840; representative for Boxford in 1823, 1827, 1828 and 1841; he gave the bell of the East Parish meeting house, and married four times (Perley, History of Boxford).

Perley (Dwellings of Boxford, p. 48): “He died April 3, 1861, lacking six days of being eighty years old. The remains of General Lowe repose in his tomb in Harmony Cemetery. Upon the face of the tomb are illustrations of himself and … wives engraved on marble tablets.” The tomb “has attracted many visitors, because of the pictures of himself and his four wives” (History, p. 359). His son Major William Lowe “died in 1870, from injuries caused by a bull which attacked him in his cowyard,” and the buildings “were completely destroyed by fire early on the morning of June 21, 1874.”

Checked against the records

  • Proven
Nathan and Lucy Low lived in John Hale's house, the Low Mansion

Perley's History of Boxford agrees, except the date: John Hale "built the late ancient Low mansion about 1750." It came to Nathan Low about 1772 and stayed in the family until Major William Low, Solomon's son, died in 1870 after a bull attacked him. The buildings burned on 21 June 1874.
