Husbandman of Hawkshead, Lancashire, England. Father of Thomas Rigg, baptized there in 1633 and apprenticed to a London scrivener in 1646/7, who was probably the Thomas Riggs who married Mary Millett. He was possibly the Robert Rigge of Hawkshead Field buried in 1670.

Notes

Husbandman (“Agricol’”) of Hawkshead, Lancashire, England. Named as the father of Thomas Rigg, baptized at Hawkshead 25 Mar 1633 and apprenticed in London on 3 Feb 1646/7 to a scrivener (Smith and Anderson, TAG 82, 2007: 120-29). The Drapers’ Company binding book records “Thomas Rigg filius Rob[er]ti Rigg de Hauckshead in Com’ Lancastrie Agricol’”, apprenticed for nine years to Richard Barlowe, scrivener, of Tower Street, London; the Hawkshead register has “bap: 1633 March xxv Thomas Rigg fil : Robti.” Smith and Anderson call the identification with Thomas Riggs of Gloucester “very probabl[e]”. A Robert Rigge of Hawkshead Field, buried 5 Sept 1670, was “possibly” this man.

  • Unlikely
Thomas Riggs came from a family of position, perhaps of London

Very probably he was Thomas Rigg, son of Robert Rigg, husbandman, of Hawkshead, Lancashire, baptized there 25 Mar 1633 and apprenticed in London in 1646/7 (Smith and Anderson, TAG 82, 2007). A farmer's son who trained in London, then, not a gentleman's.
