Notes
Tanner. His places ran Bluntisham, St Ives, Boston (about 1635) and then Portsmouth, Rhode Island, where he and Jane went after her banishment. At Portsmouth he was granted a house lot in 1639, “to buld on” within a year or forfeit it. In 1648 he and Philip Sherman were chosen “to viwe the Cattell that are sould uppon the Iland before thay be transported of the Iland,” and he served as a juror in 1649 and 1650 (Early Records of Portsmouth).
By a deed of 14 Dec 1644, “Richard Hawkins of portsmouth in the Isle of Rhods Tanner” gave his son Job “all that my now dwelling house with Thirty Acres of grownd,” to take effect “after the Decease of me the Said Richard and Jane my wife, that is to Say owne ffather and Mother to the Said Job” (Early Records of Portsmouth, pp. 418-419).
Open questions
- When he died. Records of Mass. Bay 3:63 (1646) refuses entry to “the widdowe Hawkings … being knoune to be a dangerous pson,” and Sumner follows it in calling Jane a widow by 1646, but the Portsmouth records show Richard living in 1648-1650.
