Mordecai Ellis

Also Lt. Mordecai Ellis · Mordica Ellis

Probably a son of John Ellis and Elizabeth Freeman, born at Sandwich in Plymouth Colony in 1650/1, and a brother of Lt. Matthias Ellis. A lieutenant himself, he administered his father's estate with his mother in 1677 and married Sarah. Through his son Samuel, as the compilers have it, he was an ancestor of William Lehman Ashmead Bartlett, who married the Baroness Burdett-Coutts.

Notes

Brother of Lt. Matthias Ellis. With his mother, administrator of his father’s estate, 1677. As Lt. Mordecai Ellis he sat in March 1681/2 on the jury that tried the Indian James, indicted for kicking Samuel Crocker of Barnstable, who died three weeks later; the verdict was “nott guilty of wilfull murder” (PCR 6:82-84; 7:246-249). A son Mordecai died 1 Nov 1717; a daughter Sarah married Joshua Blackwell, 8 June 1704. Through his son Samuel (Pane-Joyce, citing Brownson and McLean) he was the grandfather of Mercy Ellis (bapt. 1733), who married John Bartlett 3rd at Plymouth in 1762 and was the grandmother of Ellis Bartlett (b. 1817), father of William Lehman Ashmead Bartlett, who married the Baroness Burdett-Coutts.

Mollie's typescript· 1 claim checked

What Mollie wrote about him in The Holbrook and Low Families, checked against the records.

  • Proven
Baroness Burdett-Coutts's husband was son of Ellis Bartlett of Manomet

Confirmed. Ellis Bartlett was born at Plymouth on 15 June 1817, grandson of Mercy Ellis; Davis (1899) has his son William "m. Baroness Burdett Coutts". Mercy and George Ellis both descended from John Ellis and Elizabeth Freeman of Sandwich, so the young man was probably a distant cousin, as Mollie's father said. The Baroness was Thomas Coutts's granddaughter, not his widow.
