Mary Waite

Also Mary Lord

Probably the wife of Robert Lord of Ipswich for almost fifty-three years from about 1630, and the mother of Robert Lord (d. 1696). She was perhaps a daughter of Samuel Waite and Mary Ward, which would make her a niece of Rev. Nathaniel Ward, author of The Simple Cobler of Aggawam.

Notes

Wife of Robert Lord of Ipswich for almost fifty-three years; Hammatt (p. 208) gives the marriage as 1630. Her husband’s will “bequeathes to her all his estate during her life” (Hammatt). Mollie (pp. 107-108) makes her a daughter of Samuel Waite and Mary Ward, and so a niece of Rev. Nathaniel Ward, author of The Simple Cobler of Aggawam; her own basis is “Candler’s Pedigree of Ward in the Bodleian,” and no primary record supports it. A plausible context for Mollie’s Waite and Ward claim: Rev. John Ward’s widow Susan married Richard Rogers of Wethersfield, Essex, the Waite home. The Waite “rank” lore and the regicide Thomas Waite have no connection to her.

Open questions

  • Her parents: the Ward pedigree Mollie cites and the Wethersfield, Essex, parish registers. The colonial tree marks the Waite and Ward descent as tradition; the page has it as compiled (online trees), possible.

What Mollie wrote about her in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about her checked against the records.

  1. Her husband Robert Lord's will spoke of almost fifty years of comfortable married life and left her his whole estate for life.

his wife, Mary "with whom by God's good providence we have lived comfortably together in a married condition for almost fifty years". To her he bequeathed all his estate during her life.

  2. Mollie makes her the daughter of Samuel Waite of Wethersfield, Essex, and Mary Ward, perhaps a daughter of Rev. John Ward of Haverhill, with a brother, Rev. Joseph Waite (no primary record supports the parentage).

Their daughter Mary Waite married Robert Lord. Mary Waite had a brother who was rector of Springton in Suffolk, The Rev, Joseph Waite.

Checked against the records

  • Possible
Mary Waite was a daughter of Samuel Waite and Mary Ward

Unproven. This parentage, which would make her a niece of Rev. Nathaniel Ward, author of The Simple Cobler, is found only in online trees and in Mollie's reading of "Candler's Pedigree of Ward"; no record has been seen. One fact fits: Rev. John Ward's widow Susan married Richard Rogers of Wethersfield, Essex, the Waite home.
