John Porter

Also John Porter Sr.

A first settler of Windsor, Connecticut, who came, by Stiles's account, from Felsted, Essex, with his wife, Anna White, and nine children about 1638-39. At Windsor he was constable, juror and deputy to the General Court, and he died there in 1648, leaving a large estate. Probably the father of Samuel Porter of Hadley, and of John, who married Mary Stanley.

Notes

Father of Samuel Porter of Hadley, and a first settler of Windsor, Connecticut. The Windsor church record says: “John Porter, Sr., came from Eng. and settled here in Windsor in 1639.” Stiles adds, from Henry D. White’s statements, that he came “with wife and nine children from Felsted, County Essex, Eng., probably in the ship Susan and Ellen, 17 July, 1638, and in company with his brother-in-law, Joseph Loomis,” and that he had married Anna White of Messing in 1620 (source).

At Windsor “He had land grant …; was appointed constable, 1639/40; juror, 1640; grand-juror, 1643; deputy to General Court, 1646 and ’47, and a prominent man in the community. He ‘d. 21 and was bu. 22 April, 1648’; left a large est.” His wife had died in 1647. Among their children were Samuel, who “settled Hadley, Mass.; became the ancestor of the H. Porters,” John, who married Mary Stanley, and Mary, who married Samuel Grant of Windsor in 1658. Judd’s Hadley genealogy calls Samuel “s. of John of Windsor, Ct.” (source).
