Notes

Of Ipswich. Came on the Abigail in 1635, aged 15, with his brother William: “Jo: Fuller 15” (Hotten). Edmund Freeman’s family crossed on the same voyage.

In a 1657 hog case his servant “Katherine Brimmengen deposed that her master, John Fuller, had all his hogs yoked and ringed in the spring.” A Thomas Low (which Thomas is not stated) “deposed that John Fuller’s wife owned some of the hogs” (Essex Quarterly Courts 2:22).

His will, proved 25 Sept 1666, was signed “John ffuller”; the executors were “my wife and my son James.” It adds that “if any estate were recovered in England, that it should be equally divided.” It gives his sons John and William little “because their uncle hath undertaken to give ym sufficient portions,” and his daughters Susanna and Elizabeth little “because their Grandfather hath lately given them portions.” It also provides for a child yet to be born “if my wife should now be wt child” (Probate Records of Essex County 2:57-59). His inventory of 29 June 1666 totals £344 5s. It includes “his houster, pistells and saddle and bridell,” “on muscet,” “on fouling pese,” “noyn duson of trenshars” and “Trenshures unfinished”; the last items suggest he made wooden trenchers.

Mollie (p. 109) made James Freeman Clarke a descendant. Clarke’s line (“John 1, Joseph 2&3, Abraham 4, Sarah 5, who married Wm. Hull”) is from John Fuller of Newton, a different man.

What Mollie wrote about him in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about him checked against the records.

  1. Mollie says he came in the Abigail in 1635 with his elder brother William, married Elizabeth Emerson, lived at Salisbury from 1639 and was back at Ipswich by 1648, where he was town surveyor and owned land near Rocky Hill.

He came in the Abigail May 4 1635 with his older brother William and settled in Ipswich, N.E.. He mentions a brother Giles. He married Elizabeth Emerson d. of Thomas and Elizabeth(Brewster) Emerson, removed to Salisbury in 1639

Checked against the records

  • Disproven
James Freeman Clarke descends from John Fuller of Ipswich

A different John Fuller. The line Mollie copies (John, Joseph, Abraham, Sarah, wife of William Hull) is that of John Fuller of Newton: Judge Abraham Fuller of Newton's daughter Sarah married Gen. William Hull in 1781, and their daughter Rebecca was Clarke's mother (W. H. Fuller, 1914).
