Patricia Hatten's Browne–Chapin side: the pedigree, notable ancestors and famous kin
Research report, 7 October 2026. Branch: Henrietta Browne (1886–1964), wife of Ralph A. Hatten, and the ancestry the Ancestry tree gives her through Edward Browne and Ella Persis Chapin. Archive pages: Henrietta Browne, Edward Browne, Ella Persis Chapin, Marvin Chapin, Marion Orinda Cumins, Joseph Cumins, Hannah Converse. No archive files were changed.
Evidence tags: [D] documented (a record, or a published transcript of one), [C] compiled (a printed genealogy or a WikiTree profile), [I] inferred, [T] tradition. "Gen." below counts generations up from Patricia Hatten: gen. 1 is a parent, gen. 3 a great-grandparent, and gen. n is a (n−2)th great-grandparent.
Summary
- The weak link is the first one. Above Ella Persis Chapin the line is strong. It is better supported than the Ancestry tree knew, through a DAR application Ella made herself and two family genealogies she helped compile. But both of those genealogies say Ella and Edward Browne had no children. The Chapin Book (1924) gives "Children: BROWNE. No issue." Kith and Kin (1922) thanks "Mesdames E. P. C. Browne" for details and lists no child for her. The Chicago Blue Books of 1899 and 1904 list the household as "Mr. & Mrs. Edward Browne" and "Dr. Marvin Chapin", with no daughter. Nothing found shows Henrietta in the family. Henrietta → Edward & Ella is rated possible, and doubtful. Every connection below reaches Patricia only if that link holds. It belongs to Ella's ancestry either way.
- Above Ella the line is well supported: Dr. Marvin Chapin (1821–1907) and Marion Orinda Cumins. Marvin was the son of Loring Chapin and Sally Brace, Loring of Jotham Chapin and Ann Waite, Jotham of Lt. Jonathan Chapin and Abigail Munn. Marion was the daughter of Joseph Cumins and Hannah Converse, and Hannah of Col. Israel Converse and Hannah Walbridge.
- Deacon Samuel Chapin is an ancestor twice. The male line runs through David Chapin, which the Chapin Book calls only its "best guess". Abigail Munn gives a second line through Japhet Chapin, and her birth is a published vital record.
- The Hitchcock genealogy corrects the Chapin Book. Anna Hitchcock (wife of Jonathan Chapin, 1711–1780) was the daughter of Mary Sheldon, not of "Mary Morgan", who was her stepmother. That brings in Mary Pynchon, Col. John Pynchon, William Pynchon (founder of Springfield) and Gov. George Wyllys.
- Notable ancestors with good stories:
- Major James Converse, Speaker of the Massachusetts House, who held Storer's garrison at Wells in
- Cotton Mather called it "the Bravest Act in the War".
- Major Amos Walbridge (Valley Forge, Monmouth, Society of the Cincinnati).
- Capt. Abel Brace, who founded Winfield, N.Y., in 1793.
- Col. Israel Converse, Judge of Probate at Randolph, Vt.
- Deacon Samuel Chapin ("The Puritan" statue) and William Pynchon (his book was burned in Boston).
- Ella Persis Chapin Browne herself, who entered Vassar in its first year, 1865.
- Major James Converse, Speaker of the Massachusetts House, who held Storer's garrison at Wells in
- Famous kin, if the Henrietta link holds. The closest are Gov. Julius Converse of Vermont (first cousin of Hannah Converse) and Charles Loring Brace, founder of the Children's Aid Society (grandson of Sally Brace's uncle). Then J. P. Morgan, Roy D. Chapin and the Chapin musicians, all through Japhet Chapin. Then Presidents Cleveland and Taft, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Henry Ward Beecher, T. S. Eliot, Thomas Pynchon, E. E. Cummings and R. B. Bennett. More presidents connect distantly: Coolidge, F. D. Roosevelt, Grant, Hayes, Pierce and Fillmore.
1. Pedigree findings, link by link
Link A. Henrietta Browne (b. 9 Mar 1886, Winona) → Edward Browne and Ella Persis Chapin: possible (doubtful)
The Ancestry tree attaches no record to this link (research/gedcom/report-dwyer-hatten.md;
GEDCOM @F43@).
Evidence against:
- [C] The Chapin Book of Genealogical Data (G. W. Chapin, 1924), vol. 2, p. 2115, entry
1-4-6-1-1-1-1-3-1: "ELLA PERSIS CHAPIN … dau. Marvin & Marion Orinda (Cumins) Chapin, of Lake
Bluff, Ill. b. Feb. 13, 1848, Parkman, Ohio … m. Dec. 22, 1875, Pentwater, Mich., Edward Browne.
Children: BROWNE. No issue. Mrs. Brown was identified with the Woman's Club and president of the
School Children's Aid Society." https://archive.org/details/chapinbookofgene00chap_0
- Compiled while Ella was alive. By then Henrietta would have been about 37 and married, with a son (Jack, b. 1913).
- [C] W. M. Dixon, Kith and Kin (1922), pp. 31–32. It gives Ella only as "b. 13th February, 1848, Parkman, Ohio; m. in Michigan, Edward Browne", with no issue. The compiler was Ella's first cousin (son of her aunt Charlotte Cumins Dixon). The preface thanks "Mesdames E. P. C. Browne" among those "who have contributed details". https://archive.org/details/kithkincontainin00dixorich
- [D, directory] Chicago Blue Book, 1899 (215 Sixty-first St.) and 1904 (366 49th St.): "Mr. & Mrs. Edward Browne" and "Dr. Marvin Chapin", with no Miss Browne. Henrietta would have been 13 and 18. This is weak evidence, since Blue Books often left out younger daughters. https://archive.org/details/chicagobluebooko00unse , https://archive.org/details/chicagobluebooko1904chic
Evidence for: only the tree. The tree's details for Edward (b. 22 Jan 1850, Antrim; d. 28 Jun 1924, Lake Bluff) and Ella fit the real couple, so the tree has found the right Edward and Ella. What is unsupported is the step from Henrietta to them.
Not ruled out:
- Henrietta may have been adopted, a ward, or Edward's child by another woman. The 1924 "No issue" could be literally true and still leave room for an adopted daughter.
- Leads only, not conclusions:
- Ella's brother Robert L. Chapin lived at Seattle and Tacoma (lumberman; Seattle in 1907).
- The Hattens were in Chicago (Ralph Hatten's mother died there in 1912).
- Edward Browne was a lumber dealer, and Winona was a lumber town.
What would settle it: see section 4. Henrietta's 1964 Washington death certificate (parents); her marriage record with Ralph A. Hatten (King County, Wash., or Cook County, Ill., c. 1910–13); the 1900 and 1910 censuses of Edward Browne's household; her Social Security application.
Recommendation for the archive: keep confidence: possible on both parent links of
Henrietta Browne. Add the conflict under ## Open questions, quoting the Chapin Book's "No
issue". Raise it with Jordan before any connection below is published as Patricia's.
Link B. Ella Persis Chapin (1848–1936) → Dr. Marvin Chapin and Marion Orinda Cumins: proven
- [C, informant Ella herself] DAR Lineage Book vol. 33 (1900), p. 10, national no. 32031, "MRS. ELLA PERSIS CHAPIN BROWNE. Born in Parkman, Ohio. Wife of Edward Browne. … Daughter of Dr. Marvin Chapin and Marion O. Cumins, his wife." https://archive.org/details/lineagebooknatio33daug
- [C] Kith and Kin pp. 31–32 (Marion O. Cumins m. 11 Feb 1847 at Parkman, Ohio, Marvin Chapin; issue i. Ella Persis b. 13 Feb 1848).

- [D] Dixon Evening Telegraph, 4 Jun 1907: "Dr. Marvin Chapin of Lake Park, near Lake Forest, died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Browne." Badly scanned; Sunday was 2 Jun 1907. https://archive.org/details/dixon-evening-telegraph-1907-06-04
- [D] Chicago Blue Books (above): Dr. Marvin Chapin living with the Brownes, 1899–1904.
Conflicts with the archive:
- Marion's death: the archive has "bef. 1900, Cook, Illinois". The sources give 9 Dec 1889, Wausau, Wisconsin (Chapin Book vol. 2, p. 1677; Kith and Kin p. 31, "d. 1889, at Wausau, Wisconsin").
- Marvin's death place: the archive (from the tree) and the Chapin Book have Chicago. The 1907 obituary has Lake Park, near Lake Forest (Lake County), at Ella's home, with burial at Dixon. The death certificate would settle it.
- New for Ella Persis Chapin: marriage 22 Dec 1875, Pentwater, Michigan (Chapin Book). The Chicago Tribune of 1 Jan 1876 carries a "BROWNE–CHAPIN — In Pentwater" notice; its text could not be read here.
Link C. Dr. Marvin Chapin (b. 24 Feb 1821, Winfield, N.Y.) → Loring (Lorin) Chapin and Sarah (Sally) Brace: probable
- [C, Ella informant] DAR Lineage Book vol. 33, no. 32031: "Granddaughter of Lorin Chapin and Sally Brace, his wife".
- [C] Kith and Kin p. 32: Marvin Chapin "b. in New York; d. in Chicago, Illinois; son of Lorin and Sally (Brace) Chapin."

Y. m. 1815, Winfield, Sarah (Sally) Brace, dau. Charles & Persis (Brandegee) Brace, b. Nov. 3, 1795, Winfield, d. 1871, Silver Creek." Children: Aurilla; Woodruff (1818–1893); Marvin, b. Feb. 24, 1821, d. June 2, 1907, Chicago; Persis Brandegee (1823–1843); Charles Brace (1825–1899). https://archive.org/details/chapinbookofgene00chap
- [C] Chapin Book vol. 2, p. 1677, DR. MARVIN CHAPIN 1-4-6-1-1-1-1-3: "son Loring & Sarah (Brace) Chapin, of Winfield, Silver Creek, N. Y., Erie, Pa., Dixon & Chicago, Ill."
- [C] Brace Lineage (1927), p. 97: Charles Brace (1764–1823), son of Capt. Abel, "married Pursis Brandicha and had six daughters: … Sally (Chapin)". This is independent of the Chapin sources. https://archive.org/details/bracelineage00brac
- The three Chapin sources agree on Marvin's birth date (24 Feb 1821) and place (Winfield), and so does the tree.
What would make it proven: Marvin in Loring Chapin's household in the 1850 census, or Loring's probate (Chautauqua County, N.Y., 1864).
Link D. Loring Chapin (1790–1864) → Jotham Chapin and Ann (Anna) Waite: probable
- [C] DAR no. 32031 ("Gr.-granddaughter of Jotham Chapin and Anna Wait"); Chapin Book vol. 1, pp. 602–603. JOTHAM CHAPIN 1-4-6-1-1-1, "son Jonathan & Abigail (Munn) Chapin, of Palmer & Monson, Mass. b. Dec. 7, 1764, Monson, d. Winfield, N. Y. m. Ann Waite"; children Loring (1790), Sally (1791, m. Vose Palmer), Marvin (1798–1816).
- [C] Hardin, History of Herkimer County (1893), p. 369: "In the summer of 1792 David Wood and Jonathan Chapin settled on the south side of the stream, and in 1793 Deacon Charles Burt…". Jotham's sisters Persis and Anna married David Wood and Charles Burt (Chapin Book vol. 1, p. 603). This places the Monson Chapins at Winfield. https://archive.org/details/historyofherkime00hard
- [C] WikiTree Chapin-3184 (Jotham, 7 Dec 1764 – 30 Oct 1838, Herkimer Co.; Find a Grave 40146257, West Winfield Cemetery).
- Conflict to note: WikiTree gives Jotham only one child, "Anna Chapin" (Chapin-3185), b. 3 May 1790 at Plainfield, Otsego Co. That cannot fit with Loring b. 26 Feb 1790. One of the two is misattached. The Chapin Book and the DAR application agree on Loring.
Link E. Jotham → Lt. Jonathan Chapin (1738–1819) and Abigail Munn (1739–1838): probable
- [C] DAR no. 32031 ("Jonathan Chapin and Abigail Munn … Jonathan Chapin, (1738-1819), served in the Mass. militia").
- [C] Chapin Book vol. 1, pp. 271–272. CAPT. JONATHAN CHAPIN 1-4-6-1-1, b. Oct. 22, 1738, Palmer, d. Feb. 8, 1819, Monson; m. Abigail Munn, b. Sept. 14, 1739, d. Aug. 30, 1838, Monson, ae. 99. Children all born at Monson, Jotham first.
- [D, published transcript] Vital Records of Brimfield, Massachusetts (1931), births: "MUN, Abigail, ch. Benjamin and Rebekah, Sept. 14, 1739." Marriages: "MUN (Man, Munn), Benjamin and Rebekah Russell, Dec. 30, 1731." https://archive.org/details/vitalrecordsofbr00newe_0
Link F. Lt. Jonathan → Jonathan Chapin (1711–1780) and Anna Hitchcock (1717–1770): probable
- [C] Chapin Book vol. 1, pp. 91–92 (Jonathan 1-4-6-1, b. July 8, 1711, d. July 3, 1780, Monson; m. 1st Dec. 10, 1736, Anna Hitchcock, b. July 9, 1717, d. May 27, 1770, Palmer).
- [C] The Genealogy of the Hitchcock Family (1894), pp. 410–411: Capt. Ebenezer Hitchcock's will gives £10 "to his daughter Ann wife of Jonathan Chapin". His children include "Anna, b. July 9, 1717; m. Dec. 10, 1736, Jonathan Chapin of the Elbows." https://archive.org/details/genealogyofhitch00hitc
- Correction to the Chapin Book: it calls Anna "dau. Ebenezer & Mary (Morgan) Hitchcock". The Hitchcock genealogy says Ebenezer "married Feb. 14, 1716, Mary Sheldon who was the mother of his fourteen children", and "for his second wife, the Widow Mary Morgan of Brimfield".
Link G. Jonathan (1711) → Jonathan Chapin and Elizabeth Burt (m. 20 Apr 1710): probable
- [C] Chapin Book vol. 1, p. 22 (Jonathan 1-4-6, m. Elizabeth Burt; one child, Jonathan b. July 8, 1711). WikiTree Chapin-2906 has the son b. Nov. 1709 at Boston, a minor conflict.
Link H. Jonathan (m. Elizabeth Burt) → David Chapin and Lydia Crump → Deacon Samuel Chapin: possible
- [C] Chapin Book vol. 1, p. 22, in the compiler's own words: "There has been great difficulty in identifying Jonathan Chapin who married Elizabeth Burt … by a process of elimination we arrive at the theory that Jonathan, son of David and Lydia (Crump) Chapin is our best guess, but absolute proof is impossible." Online trees, WikiTree included, repeat the guess.
- This does not matter for the Chapin descent, because of Link I.
Link I. Abigail Munn → Benjamin Munn → Sarah Chapin → Japhet Chapin → Deacon Samuel Chapin: probable
- [D] Brimfield VR (above): Abigail, daughter of Benjamin and Rebekah (Russell) Munn.
- [C] Chapin Book vol. 1, pp. 34–35. BENJAMIN MUNN 1-1-2-6, "son Nathaniel & Sarah (Chapin) Munn, of Brimfield and Monson", b. Aug. 12, 1700, Springfield, d. 1775, Monson; m. Dec. 30, 1731, Rebecca Russell. Children include "Abigail m. 1-4-6-1-1 b. Sept. 14, 1739 … d. Aug. 30, 1838, age 99".
- [C] Chapin Book vol. 1, p. 10: SARAH CHAPIN 1-1-2, dau. Japhet & Abilenah (Cooley) Chapin, b. 15 Mar 1668, d. 23 Nov 1747; m. 24 Mar 1689/90 Nathaniel Munn, son of Benjamin & Abigail Burt (Ball) Munn.
- [C] Chapin Book vol. 1, pp. 1–3: Japhet Chapin (bapt. 15 Oct 1642, Roxbury; d. 20 Feb 1712, Springfield), son of Dea. Samuel Chapin (bapt. 8 Oct 1598, Paignton; d. 11 Nov 1675, Springfield) and Cicely Penny.
- WikiTree has the same chain: Munn-3333, Munn-1397, Chapin-337, Chapin-19, Chapin-671.
- So Deacon Samuel Chapin is Patricia's 9th great-grandfather (gen. 11) through Japhet, and possibly a second time through David.
Link J. Anna Hitchcock → Mary Sheldon → Mary Whiting → Mary Pynchon → Col. John Pynchon and Amy Wyllys: probable
- [C] Hitchcock genealogy pp. 410–411: Mary Sheldon "was the daughter of Joseph Sheldon … a representative to the general court in 1708 … The mother of Mary Sheldon was Mary, daughter of Capt. Joseph Whiting, treasurer of Connecticut … The wife of Joseph Whiting was Mary, daughter of the Hon. John Pynchon of Springfield … In 1785 [sic], Ebenezer Hitchcock received from the Pynchon estate three hundred and seventy-nine pounds, being the rest of his wife's fortune from that source."
- [C] J. H. Morse, Genealogiae (1925), pp. 108–109. Joseph Whiting m. first 5 Oct 1669 Mary, daughter of Hon. John Pynchon. "Children of Joseph and Mary Pynchon Whiting — Mary born Aug. 19, 1672, married Joseph Sheldon and second John Ashley." (It wrongly calls Mary Pynchon's mother "Anna, daughter of Hon. John Wyllys"; she was Amy, daughter of Gov. George Wyllys.) https://archive.org/details/genealogiaeordat00mors_0
- [C] Dwight, History of the Descendants of John Dwight (1874): "Mary Pynchon, b. Oct. 28, 1650, m. Oct. 6, 1671 [sic], Joseph Whiting of Westfield." https://archive.org/details/historyofdescend02dwigiala
- [C] WikiTree Sheldon-2863, Sheldon-153, Whiting-113 (it gives Mary Whiting b. 1677, conflicting with Morse's 1672), Pynchon-35, Pynchon-6, Wyllys-6, Wyllys-4.
- Note: the Hitchcock genealogy names Ebenezer's mother Sarah Dorchester; WikiTree has Sarah Burt. This does not affect the lines here.
Link K. Marion Orinda Cumins (1818–1889) → Joseph Cumins (1781–1851) and Hannah Converse (1785–1856): proven
- [C] Kith and Kin p. 30. Joseph Cumins "was b. 15th January, 1781, at Windsor, Vermont; d. 18th October, 1851, at Grandetour, Illinois; m., 2nd October, 1808, at Randolph, Vermont, Hannah Converse, who was b. 8th April, 1785, at Randolph; d. 21st August, 1856, at Grandetour". Issue includes "iv. Marion O. Cumins, b. 8th September, 1818". The compiler was Marion's nephew.
- [C] Chapin Book vol. 2, p. 1677: "Marion Orinda Cumins, dau. Joseph & Hannah (Converse) Cumins, b. Sept. 8, 1818, Randall [Randolph], Vt."
- [C, Ella informant] DAR no. 32031.
- [C] History of Lee County (1881), pp. 195–196. Marion's brother "Theron Cumins … was the son of Joseph and Hannah (Converse) Cumins … His parents left Vermont and moved to Ohio when he was fifteen years of age, and settled in Geauga county." That explains Parkman, Ohio, where Marion married in 1847. https://archive.org/details/historyofleecoun01hill
- [D] Dixon Telegraph 1907: "Mrs. Chapin was a sister of Theron Cumins."
- Archive fixes:
- Hannah's death is 21 Aug 1856 on Kith and Kin p. 30 but 31 Aug 1856 on p. 54 (the book disagrees with itself).
- Joseph's full dates (15 Jan 1781; 18 Oct 1851) and the marriage (2 Oct 1808, Randolph) can be added.
Link L. Joseph Cumins → Lt. Jerahmeel Cummings and Deborah Kendall → … → Isaac Cummings of Topsfield: probable
- [C] Kith and Kin pp. 27–30, after Mooar's Cummings Memorial (1903): Isaac (Watertown 1636,
Ipswich 1639) > John (1630–1700, Boxford, m. Sarah Howlett) > John (1657–, Chelmsford, m.
Elizabeth Kingsley) > Samuel (1684–1718, Groton, m. Elizabeth Shedd) > Leonard (1714–1758,
Londonderry, N.H., m. Jane) > Jerahmeel (b. 20 Sep 1750; "First Lieutenant, in 1781, of a company

Link M. Hannah Converse → Col. Israel Converse (1743–1806) and Hannah Walbridge (1752–1830): probable (near proven)
- [C] Kith and Kin pp. 47–48. Col. Israel Converse "was b. 7th August, 1743; d. 28th March, 1806, at Randolph, Vermont; m., firstly, 1765, Sarah Lewis; m., secondly, 1771, at Stafford, Connecticut, Hannah Walbridge … d. 17th October, 1830, at Parkman, Ohio". - [C] DAR no. 32031; SAR Spirit of Patriotism (1915), with the same lineage.
- Archive fixes (note on Hannah Converse):
- Israel's death is 28 Mar 1806 (Kith and Kin; WikiTree Converse-1023), not 28 May.
- Hannah Walbridge's birth is 11 Oct 1752 (Stafford town records via Wallbridge), not 1751 (the DAR also says 1751).
- The mother's name should read Hannah Walbridge; the page has "Hannah Converse".
Link N. Israel → Lt. Josiah Converse (1710–1775) & Eleanor Richardson → Capt. Josiah (1684–1771) & Hannah Sawyer → Maj. James (1645–1706) & Hannah Carter → Lt. James (1620–1715) & Anna Long → Dea. Edward Converse: probable

- [C] WikiTree Converse-292, -294, -208, -339, -26, Convers-34.
- Kith and Kin gives Edward Converse a royal pedigree from the Conyers of Sockburn. That is rejected (section 5).
Link O. Hannah Walbridge → Maj. Amos (Ames) Walbridge (1727–1793) & Margaret → Amos Walbridge (1693–1788) & Theodia Porter → Experience Porter & Abigail Williams → Samuel Porter & Hannah Stanley of Hadley → John Porter of Windsor: probable
- [C] Wallbridge genealogy pp. 43–45: Amos b. Dec. 15, 1727, at Norwich (T. R.), d. Oct. 24, 1793,
at Stafford; "m. prior to 1751, Margaret ___".
- The tree's surname "Washburn" for Margaret is unsupported.
- The tree's death place "Hartford" conflicts with Stafford.
- Kith and Kin p. 57 has his birth as 1724.
- [C] Kith and Kin p. 56: Amos (1693–1788) m. 1719 Theodia Porter, b. 15 Aug 1699 at Hadley.

Link P. Sally Brace → Charles Brace (1764–1823) & Persis Brandegee → Capt. Abel Brace (1740–1832) & Keziah Woodruff: probable
- [C] Brace Lineage (1927), pp. 97–98: Capt. Abel Brace, son of Henry II, bapt. Hartford Sept. 28, 1740, m. Apr. 2, 1761, Keziah Woodruff of Farmington; children include "Charles, born May 4, 1764, died April 3, 1823, married Pursis Brandicha and had six daughters … Sally (Chapin)".
- [C] DAR no. 32031: "Charles Brace and Persis Brandegee … Abel Brace and Kezia Woodruff, (1742-1812)".
- Persis Brandegee's parents were not found. That leaves open whether she was kin to the Brandegees of Berlin, Connecticut (Senator Frank B. Brandegee); it is not a connection until her parents are found.
Edward Browne (1850–1924): what was found
- Lumber merchant of Chicago:
- [D] Advertisements in the American Lumberman, 1899–1901: "EDWARD BROWNE, 1106 Chamber of Commerce, CHICAGO … Michigan Pine Lumber".
- [C] Chicago: Pre-eminently a Presbyterian City (1907): "Mr. Edward Browne, president of the Edward Browne Lumber Co., is an elder in the Second church." https://archive.org/details/chicagopreeminen00stev
- [D] Reports of Cases … Appellate Courts of Illinois (1905): a suit "commenced by Edward Browne, Robert L. Chapin [Ella's brother], William P. Gary and Arthur C. Lombard, co-partners, doing business as Browne-Chapin Lumber Company". "Edward Browne was adjudged a bankrupt, and the Chicago Title & Trust Company, his trustee, was substituted." https://archive.org/details/reportscasesdet01smitgoog
- Nothing found on his Antrim origin. His dates are from the tree only.
2. Notable ancestors: material for short stories
All of these are ancestors of Ella Persis Chapin Browne. They are Patricia's only if Link A holds. Generations are given from Patricia.
Ella Persis Chapin Browne (1848–1936), gen. 3 — among Vassar's first students; Lake Bluff clubwoman; family historian
- [D] Washington Post, 11 Mar 1928 (AP, Miami): "The Vassar Club of Miami had one of the first
graduates and one [of] last year's graduates at its luncheon this week. The oldest graduate was
Mrs. Edward Browne, of Lake Bluff, Ills., who was in the class of 1869, after having entered the
institution in 1865, the year it was founded by Mathew Vassar."

4. Lookups needing Ancestry, FamilySearch or other logins
In priority order. The first group decides whether any of this is Patricia's.
- Henrietta Hatten's Washington death certificate, King County, August 1964 (parents' names, birthplace). FamilySearch "Washington, Death Certificates", or the Washington State Digital Archives. The Digital Archives are free but behind reCAPTCHA, which this session could not pass.
- Ralph A. Hatten and Henrietta Browne's marriage, c. 1910–1913. Try King County (Washington Digital Archives) first, then the Cook County, Illinois, marriage index (FamilySearch): Ralph's mother Sarah (Allee) Hatten died in Chicago in 1912.
- 1900 U.S. census, Chicago (Hyde Park), 215 E. 61st St. Edward Browne's household with Dr. Marvin Chapin: is there a Henrietta, about 14? Then the 1910 census (Chicago or Lake Bluff) and the 1920 census, Lake Bluff, Lake Co.
- Henrietta's Social Security application (U.S. Social Security Applications and Claims Index, Ancestry) for her parents' names. Winona County birth record, 9 Mar 1886, and the 1895 Minnesota state census.
- Edward Browne's probate, Lake County, Illinois, 1924, and Ella P. C. Browne's death certificate and obituary (Chicago Tribune / Lake Forest papers, January 1936), for heirs and survivors.
- Dr. Marvin Chapin's death record, 2 Jun 1907: Lake County (Lake Park/Lake Forest) per the obituary, or Cook County per the Chapin Book. Also his burial at Dixon (Oakwood Cemetery?, Find a Grave).
- Marion Orinda (Cumins) Chapin's death, Wausau, Marathon Co., Wisconsin, 9 Dec 1889 (Wisconsin pre-1907 death index).
- Ella's DAR application papers, national no. 32031 (DAR Genealogical Research System). These may include documents for each generation.
- Loring Chapin's household in the 1850 census, Silver Creek, Chautauqua Co., N.Y. (Marvin in it?), and Loring's probate (1864).
- Jotham Chapin's family: Monson, Mass., town records for his 7 Dec 1764 birth; and WikiTree's "Anna Chapin b. 3 May 1790, Plainfield" (Chapin-3185), which conflicts with Loring b. 26 Feb 1790.
- Persis Brandegee's parents (Berlin or Middletown, Conn., Brandegee family) and Ann Waite's parents. Both are open.
- For famous-kin entries: the Cummings Memorial (Mooar, 1903) for E. E. Cummings's line above Archelaus. Charles Allen Converse, Converse Family and Allied Families (1905), for the Converse lines (not on archive.org).
5. Checked and ruled out
- Marvin Chapin (1807–1899) of Springfield, Mass. He was born at Somers, Conn., was landlord of the Massasoit House, president of a Springfield bank and an originator of the Springfield Fire & Marine Insurance Co. (King's Handbook of Springfield; Our County and Its People; WikiTree Chapin-1883). He fills the full-text search results for "Marvin Chapin". Unrelated (a namesake), and not to be confused with Dr. Marvin Chapin (1821–1907).
- Marvin Chapin (1798–1816), Jotham's son, d. aged 18 (Chapin Book p. 603). He is Dr. Marvin's uncle and namesake, not the same man.
- Dr. Marvin Chapin, oral surgeon (Chicago, then UNC Chapel Hill, 1940s–50s). Namesake.
- Henrietta Hatten, contralto, of Trenton, N.J. / Bristol, Pa. (Musical Courier 1932, Musical America 1933, Bristol Courier 1940). Namesake.
- Henrietta Browne, actress (Portsmouth Herald 1901–02, Variety 1912, Kingston Freeman 1924), and Henrietta Brown Hagerty (1883–1973). Namesakes.
- Capt. Edward H. Browne of Fort Sheridan (Blue Book 1899) and a later "Mrs. Edward Browne" of Lake Bluff (Loyola doctorate, Congressional Record 1973). Namesakes.
- Sir William Anthony Browne (1527–1570) and Cicely Browne (1553–1605) in the Ancestry tree. They are in another branch (Tue family) and are not attached to Edward Browne of Antrim, who has no parents in the tree.
- The Conyers of Sockburn pedigree for Deacon Edward Converse (Kith and Kin pp. 38–39, after Hill, back to "Roger de Coigneries … came to England with William of Normandy"). Not accepted. Edward's origin is given elsewhere (WikiTree) as Navestock, Essex, and the Conyers descent has no documentary link. Do not use.
- "A direct descendant of Archbishop Gilbert Sheldon of Canterbury" (Hitchcock genealogy, of Joseph Sheldon). Unsupported; do not use.
- Anna Hitchcock as "dau. Ebenezer & Mary (Morgan)" (Chapin Book). Corrected: Mary Morgan was her stepmother (Hitchcock genealogy).
- Frederick Shepherd Converse (composer). His WikiTree ancestry does not reach Patricia's Converses within the generations available. No line established.
- Persis Brandegee → the Brandegees of Berlin, Conn. (Sen. Frank B. Brandegee). No line, because her parents are unknown. Not a connection.
- The David Chapin step (Link H) is not ruled out, only unproven. Nothing in section 3 depends on it.
- Theron Cumins and the Grand Detour Plow Co. Real and well documented, but not Wikipedia-level. He is Marion's brother, so he belongs under notable relatives, not famous kin.

# Patricia Hatten's Browne–Chapin side: the pedigree, notable ancestors and famous kinResearch report, 7 October 2026. Branch: Henrietta Browne (1886–1964), wife of Ralph A. Hatten, and the ancestry the Ancestry tree gives her through Edward Browne and Ella Persis Chapin.Archive pages: `henrietta-browne-1886`, `edward-browne-1850`, `ella-chapin-1848`,`marvin-chapin-1821`, `marion-cummings-1818`, `joseph-cumins-1781`, `hannah-converse-1785`.No archive files were changed.Evidence tags: [D] documented (a record, or a published transcript of one), [C] compiled (a printedgenealogy or a WikiTree profile), [I] inferred, [T] tradition. "Gen." below counts generations up fromPatricia Hatten: gen. 1 is a parent, gen. 3 a great-grandparent, and gen. n is a (n−2)th great-grandparent.---## Summary1. **The weak link is the first one.** Above Ella Persis Chapin the line is strong. It is bettersupported than the Ancestry tree knew, through a DAR application Ella made herself and two familygenealogies she helped compile. But both of those genealogies say **Ella and Edward Browne had nochildren**. The *Chapin Book* (1924) gives "Children: BROWNE. No issue." *Kith and Kin* (1922)thanks "Mesdames E. P. C. Browne" for details and lists no child for her. The Chicago Blue Books of1899 and 1904 list the household as "Mr. & Mrs. Edward Browne" and "Dr. Marvin Chapin", with nodaughter. Nothing found shows Henrietta in the family. **Henrietta → Edward & Ella is ratedpossible, and doubtful.** Every connection below reaches Patricia only if that link holds. Itbelongs to Ella's ancestry either way.2. **Above Ella the line is well supported:** Dr. Marvin Chapin (1821–1907) and Marion OrindaCumins. Marvin was the son of Loring Chapin and Sally Brace, Loring of Jotham Chapin and Ann Waite,Jotham of Lt. Jonathan Chapin and Abigail Munn. Marion was the daughter of Joseph Cumins and HannahConverse, and Hannah of Col. Israel Converse and Hannah Walbridge.3. **Deacon Samuel Chapin is an ancestor twice.** The male line runs through David Chapin, whichthe *Chapin Book* calls only its "best guess". Abigail Munn gives a second line through JaphetChapin, and her birth is a published vital record.4. **The Hitchcock genealogy corrects the Chapin Book.** Anna Hitchcock (wife of Jonathan Chapin,1711–1780) was the daughter of Mary Sheldon, not of "Mary Morgan", who was her stepmother. Thatbrings in **Mary Pynchon, Col. John Pynchon, William Pynchon (founder of Springfield) and Gov.George Wyllys**.5. **Notable ancestors with good stories:**- Major James Converse, Speaker of the Massachusetts House, who held Storer's garrison at Wells in1692. Cotton Mather called it "the Bravest Act in the War".- Major Amos Walbridge (Valley Forge, Monmouth, Society of the Cincinnati).- Capt. Abel Brace, who founded Winfield, N.Y., in 1793.- Col. Israel Converse, Judge of Probate at Randolph, Vt.- Deacon Samuel Chapin ("The Puritan" statue) and William Pynchon (his book was burned in Boston).- Ella Persis Chapin Browne herself, who entered Vassar in its first year, 1865.6. **Famous kin, if the Henrietta link holds.** The closest are Gov. Julius Converse of Vermont(first cousin of Hannah Converse) and Charles Loring Brace, founder of the Children's Aid Society(grandson of Sally Brace's uncle). Then J. P. Morgan, Roy D. Chapin and the Chapin musicians, allthrough Japhet Chapin. Then Presidents Cleveland and Taft, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Henry WardBeecher, T. S. Eliot, Thomas Pynchon, E. E. Cummings and R. B. Bennett. More presidents connectdistantly: Coolidge, F. D. Roosevelt, Grant, Hayes, Pierce and Fillmore.---## 1. Pedigree findings, link by link### Link A. Henrietta Browne (b. 9 Mar 1886, Winona) → Edward Browne and Ella Persis Chapin: **possible (doubtful)**The Ancestry tree attaches no record to this link (`research/gedcom/report-dwyer-hatten.md`;GEDCOM `@F43@`).**Evidence against:**- [C] *The Chapin Book of Genealogical Data* (G. W. Chapin, 1924), vol. 2, p. 2115, entry1-4-6-1-1-1-1-3-1: "ELLA PERSIS CHAPIN … dau. Marvin & Marion Orinda (Cumins) Chapin, of LakeBluff, Ill. b. Feb. 13, 1848, Parkman, Ohio … m. Dec. 22, 1875, Pentwater, Mich., Edward Browne.Children: BROWNE. No issue. Mrs. Brown was identified with the Woman's Club and president of theSchool Children's Aid Society." https://archive.org/details/chapinbookofgene00chap_0- Compiled while Ella was alive. By then Henrietta would have been about 37 and married, with ason (Jack, b. 1913).- [C] W. M. Dixon, *Kith and Kin* (1922), pp. 31–32. It gives Ella only as "b. 13th February, 1848,Parkman, Ohio; m. in Michigan, Edward Browne", with no issue. The compiler was Ella's first cousin(son of her aunt Charlotte Cumins Dixon). The preface thanks "Mesdames E. P. C. Browne" amongthose "who have contributed details". https://archive.org/details/kithkincontainin00dixorich- [D, directory] *Chicago Blue Book*, 1899 (215 Sixty-first St.) and 1904 (366 49th St.): "Mr. & Mrs.Edward Browne" and "Dr. Marvin Chapin", with no Miss Browne. Henrietta would have been 13 and 18.This is weak evidence, since Blue Books often left out younger daughters.https://archive.org/details/chicagobluebooko00unse , https://archive.org/details/chicagobluebooko1904chic**Evidence for:** only the tree. The tree's details for Edward (b. 22 Jan 1850, Antrim; d. 28 Jun1924, Lake Bluff) and Ella fit the real couple, so the tree has found the right Edward and Ella. What is unsupported is the step from Henrietta to them.**Not ruled out:**- Henrietta may have been adopted, a ward, or Edward's child by another woman. The 1924 "No issue"could be literally true and still leave room for an adopted daughter.- Leads only, not conclusions:- Ella's brother Robert L. Chapin lived at Seattle and Tacoma (lumberman; Seattle in 1907).- The Hattens were in Chicago (Ralph Hatten's mother died there in 1912).- Edward Browne was a lumber dealer, and Winona was a lumber town.**What would settle it:** see section 4. Henrietta's 1964 Washington death certificate (parents);her marriage record with Ralph A. Hatten (King County, Wash., or Cook County, Ill., c. 1910–13); the1900 and 1910 censuses of Edward Browne's household; her Social Security application.**Recommendation for the archive:** keep `confidence: possible` on both parent links of`henrietta-browne-1886`. Add the conflict under `## Open questions`, quoting the Chapin Book's "Noissue". Raise it with Jordan before any connection below is published as Patricia's.### Link B. The sources give **9 Dec 1889,Wausau, Wisconsin** (*Chapin Book* vol. 2, p. 1677; *Kith and Kin* p. 31, "d. 1889, at Wausau,Wisconsin").- Marvin's death place: the archive (from the tree) and the *Chapin Book* have Chicago. The 1907obituary has Lake Park, near Lake Forest (Lake County), at Ella's home, with burial at Dixon. Thedeath certificate would settle it.- New for `ella-chapin-1848`: marriage 22 Dec 1875, Pentwater, Michigan (*Chapin Book*). This is independent of the Chapin sources.https://archive.org/details/bracelineage00brac- The three Chapin sources agree on Marvin's birth date (24 Feb 1821) and place (Winfield), and sodoes the tree. What would make it proven: Marvin in Loring Chapin's household in the 1850 census, or Loring'sprobate (Chautauqua County, N.Y., 1864).### Link D. Loring Chapin (1790–1864) → Jotham Chapin and Ann (Anna) Waite: **probable**- [C] DAR no. 32031 ("Gr.-granddaughter of Jotham Chapin and Anna Wait"); *Chapin Book* vol. 1,pp. 602–603. That cannot fit with Loring b. 26 Feb 1790. One of the two ismisattached. The *Chapin Book* and the DAR application agree on Loring.### Link E. Jotham → Lt. TheHitchcock genealogy says Ebenezer "married Feb. 14, 1716, Mary Sheldon who was the mother of hisfourteen children", and "for his second wife, the Widow Mary Morgan of Brimfield".### Link G.
