summary
Lyme's Captain, probably a son of Lieut. Reinold Marvin and Sarah Clark: one of the first deacons of the Lyme church, captain of its train-band from 1718, and its deputy to the General Court most years from 1711 to 1728. By family tradition he nailed his banns, in rhyme, to the meeting-house door. By his second wife, Martha Waterman, he was probably the father of Capt. Elisha Marvin; he died at Lyme, Connecticut, in 1737.

Capt. Reinold Marvin, "Lyme's Captain," son of Lieut. Reinold Marvin and Sarah Clark. When the First Congregational Church of Lyme was gathered on 27 March 1693 he was chosen one of its first two deacons, but the town records call him by his military title: sergeant of the train-band by 1702, ensign in 1712, and on 8 May 1718 "established and confirmed" by the Legislature "to be Captain of the First Train-band or Company" in Lyme. He was townsman (selectman) in many years between 1697 and 1732, moderator, grand juror and lister; in 1728 he met the New London men to "Renew the Town Bounds"; and he represented Lyme in the General Court "most of the time from 1711 to 1728 inclusive." An old family note-book calls him "remarkable for his excentricities, yet esteemed as a very useful and godly man" (source).

The one tradition the family ties to him is his banns. "When he 'published' his Intention of Marriage, he wrote it in rhyme, and nailed it to the meeting-house door":

Reinold Marvin and Phebe Lee Do intend to marry: And though her dad opposed be, We can no longer tarry.

Phebe died in 1707, leaving five children, and in 1709 he married Martha Waterman, the mother of Elisha. Eleven years after Phebe's death he made over to her brothers his right in her father's large real estate, which "confirms the tradition that it was the remarkable beauty of the maiden, and not her father's wealth, which attracted him." He lies between his two wives in the Duck River burying ground, in a grave "noticeable for its length, which may show that the old warrior had the tall stature characteristic of the family" (source).

Children by Phebe Lee: Phebe (1696), Dea. Reinold (1698/9), Daniel (1701/2), Lydia (1703/4) and Hester (1707). By Martha Waterman: Martha (1710), Elisha (1711, died an infant), James (1713), Sarah (1715/16), Capt. Elisha (1717/18) and Miriam (1719/20). Through Phebe Lee's son Dea. Reinold he is the ancestor of Judge William Marvin, provisional governor of Florida in 1865, his brother Richard Pratt Marvin, and Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith; the Hatten line comes down from the second marriage.

Research: Notable connections of Patricia Hatten (1940-2009): the paternal Hatten line.
