Mercy was probably born Mercy Nye, at Sandwich on 8 Apr 1652: "Mercy Nie the daughter of Beniamen Nie."
King Philip's War. The war probably took her brother Benjamin, one of the five Sandwich men killed with Capt. Michael Pierce near Pawtucket on 26 Mar 1676 (Rev. Noah Newman's letter, in Soldiers in King Philip's War, pp. 359-360; see Benjamin Nye).
About 1678/9 she married Matthias Ellis of Sandwich, later Lieutenant, and nine children were recorded there "of Matthias Ellis and Mercy Ellis his wife," 1679/80-1699. Later genealogies called her "Mary Burgess," a name that belonged, it seems, to the wife of his brother Manoah.
Matthias's will of 1744 left "my Loveing wife Mercy" the use of "the Westerly End of My Now Dwelling house Both Lower & upper Rooms & the Leantue on the Back Side of it and the Seller under it" and of "my orchard Called the Little Orchard," while she remained his widow, with "such and so much of my Household Goods as she shall think Necessary and Convenient," and with their son Malachi to provide "Cloathing, firewood ... and all necessaries & Conveniences of life for her comfort & Support Both in Sickness or health." She and Malachi were his executors, and administration was committed to her on 4 Oct 1748.
