Sergeant, of Gloucester, born there at the end of February 1652/3, probably the son of Philip and Jane Stanwood.

King Philip's War. In the war's first winter John, twenty-two, served about ten weeks in the Lancaster garrison, from about November 1675 into January 1676, with John Fitch, also of Gloucester. On 25 Jan 1675/6 Treasurer John Hull posted their wages among seven men "Credited at Lancaster Garrison": "John Stanwood 03 01 08" (Soldiers in King Philip's War, p. 355). Two weeks later, on 10 Feb 1676, Lancaster was attacked and the Rowlandson garrison house fell. That spring he and his brother Philip served under Capt. Samuel Brocklebank of Rowley, probably in the company's garrison at Marlborough from February to April 1676; Brocklebank was killed near Sudbury on 21 Apr. On 24 July 1676 John was credited "John Stanwood 01 02 00," and Philip £3 8s. 6d. (Bodge p. 207); Robert Rand and John Burrill of Lynn were credited in the same company. Gloucester took over the wages, "Glocester-Town Cr. ... John Stanwood 01 02 00, Philip Stanwood ..., Samuel Stanwood ..." (24 Aug 1676, Bodge p. 370): "The town undertook the payment, and gave the money to the families of the men" (Bolton, p. 30). His younger brother Samuel (b. 1658) was credited £2 2s. under Maj. Waldron on 29 Feb 1675/6 and £4 10s. under Capt. Jonathan Poole on 24 Aug 1676 (Bodge pp. 260, 310).

All three brothers drew soldiers' lots at Kettle Cove "for their 'service in the Indian war'" (Babson, pp. 206-207), probably in February 1679/80, in the Town Book kept by the town clerk, Thomas Riggs. John exchanged his lot, number six, with John Sargent for lot seven on the Cape (Bolton pp. 30, 32).

On 9 Dec 1680 he married Lydia Butler at Boston, by "Capten John Hull," probably the Boston mint-master, then a magistrate and a militia captain; "The records of Gloucester, entered at Salem, give her name as 'Lidea Cuttler'" (Bolton p. 32).

He died on 25 Jan 1705/6. His inventory lists "one Dwelling House very old and bad & five acres of land & four acres of Salt marsh...", "one old Sloop", "Arms and sword", "Books 6s" and a "Canoe 6s". It was signed by "Thomas Riggs Sen'" (the town clerk, whose grandson Joshua Riggs married John's granddaughter Experience Stanwood), James Davis and John Ring. Administration went to his eldest son John on 18 Mar 1705/6 (Bolton pp. 34-35).
