- note
- William Flyn, 60, of Mallow, came with a son John, 24, on the Brunswick in 1825. William and John were located on the two halves of lot 11, concession 10, Emily, and in 1846 John Flynn of Emily took over William's half through the Heir and Devisee Commission. No record seen says in words that John was William's son; the 1846 claim papers would.

Father of James Murray Flynn, named with his wife Anne Murray in James's baptism at Emily Township, 1847 (record).
He is very probably the John Flyn, 24, who came out from Cove of Cork on the Brunswick in May 1825 with William Flyn, 60, a "reduced farmer" of Mallow, and Daniel, Mary, Johanna and Nancy, among the Peter Robinson settlers (source). He was on the surgeon's sick list for three days in June (source). On 24 November 1825 William was located on the north half of lot 11, concession 10, Emily Township, John on the south half, and Daniel on the north half of lot 10, concession 9 (source). The township's assessment that year has a household of six on John's half-lot, which fits the family of the Brunswick; William died in Emily in 1826 (source). John's half-lot was confirmed to him in 1834, and in January 1846 John Flynn of Emily took over William's half through the Heir and Devisee Commission.
The family was away from the lot about 1840, when their daughter Mary was born in the United States. In the census of 1851 (taken January 1852) John Flynn, 50, farmer, born in Ireland, Roman Catholic, is in Emily with Ann, 38, and William, 18, John, 16, Mary, 12, Elizabeth, 6, James, 4, and Margaret, 2 (source); the abstract of that year's farm returns puts him on lot 11, concession 10, with 50 acres cleared. In 1861 John Flinn, 60, is there with Ann, William, Mary, Eliza, James and Margaret (source). The censuses give no relationships, so the children other than James are his and Ann's by inference. Emily had no resident priest until 1851; Mass was said in settlers' houses by priests from Peterborough and, from 1840, Lindsay.
Daniel Flynn's half-lot, concession 9, lot 10, was still held by his family in 1921 (source).
Open questions
- The Heir and Devisee Commission claim for the north half of lot 11, concession 10 (January 1846; RG 1 C-I-3, vol. 92, p. 5; claim papers at the Archives of Ontario, RG 40), which would say how he was William's successor; and his land petitions of 1842 and 1846.
- Where the family was about 1840, when Mary was born in the United States.
- His death: 8 March 1863 in the Ancestry tree, with no record seen. The family, or part of it, went to the United States after 1861.
