note
His children were baptized and born there after Mendon was abandoned: "Matthew, s. Hep., bp. 9: 2m: 1676" (his daughter Martha) and "John, s. Hope, Feb. 19, 1677" (Roxbury VR 1:340).

Hope was apprenticed to Thomas Chandler of Andover, and in 1662 he ran away; his brother Moses burned the indenture. He went with the family to Roxbury and then to Mendon, where he shared in the land division of 1671, drew "Lot 30" in a swamp division the next year and was a surveyor of highways in 1673 (The Tyler Genealogy, 1:26).

King Philip's War. On 14 July 1675 Mendon was attacked, the first town of Massachusetts Bay to be struck, and its people abandoned it; Richard Post, the husband of his sister Mary, was probably killed there. Hope took his family back to Roxbury: "In 1675 when the inhabitants fled from the Indian raid he went to his old home in Roxbury, for his child Martha ... was baptized there, and the next year his son John was born there" (Brigham 1:26). The Roxbury records have them both: "Matthew, s. Hep., bp. 9: 2m: 1676," his daughter Martha, baptized 9 Apr 1676, and "John, s. Hope, Feb. 19, 1677" (record, 1:340).

By 1681 he was at Andover (1:26). In 1682 he deeded his fifteen-acre house lot at Mendon to his brother Samuel, then of "Rowley Village," who had served on the Narragansett campaign (Brigham 1:36). In 1692 his wife was accused of witchcraft and imprisoned, and released (1:26).

Brigham traces Edith Kermit (Carow) Roosevelt's descent from him: Hopestill > Daniel (m. Anna Geer 1700) > Daniel (1701-1802) > Capt. Daniel (1750-1832, m. Mehitable Putnam, daughter of Gen. Israel Putnam) > Gen. Daniel (1799-1882) > Gertrude Elizabeth (m. Charles Carow 1859) > Edith (b. 1861, m. Theodore Roosevelt 1886).
