Son of Capt. Hopestill Foster of Dorchester, named in his father's will of 1676, and brother of Ensign Hopestill Foster and of John Foster, the printer. He was baptized at Dorchester on 24 Aug 1653 (Records of the First Church at Dorchester, p. 163), so he was about twenty-two when the war came.
King Philip's War. Elisha very probably rode with Capt. Thomas Brattle's troop of horse. On 27 Apr 1676 Brattle's was one of three troops sent out with the foot companies of Capts. Sill, Cutler and John Holbrook "to range the Woods towards Hassanamesit"; on 6 May the horse "killed and took of the Enemy about sixteen," and the men were released on 10 May (Hubbard, Narrative, Drake's ed. 1:224-226). Elisha was probably with them, or rode with Brattle later that spring. On 24 Aug 1676 "Elisha Foster" was credited £1 4s 8d for his service under Brattle, and 10s 2d under Capt. John Jacob of Hingham, who commanded the company of the late Capt. Isaac Johnson, in Medfield when the town was burned on 21 Feb 1676 (Soldiers in King Philip's War, pp. 264, 285).
On 5 Mar 1676/7, when the Dorchester church renewed its covenant, "Elisha ffoster" and his brother "Comfort ffoster" were among the children of the church who gave their assent, with Consider Atherton and Richard Mather (Dorchester church records, pp. 73-74). He married Sarah Payson at Dorchester on 10 Apr 1678 (Dorchester records, vol. 21, p. 24). She was probably the "Sarah, d. Giles, bp. July 16, 1648" of the Roxbury records (Roxbury VR 1:269), Deacon Giles Payson's daughter (Savage 3:373), so two Foster brothers married two Payson sisters: Ensign Hopestill had married Elizabeth Payson in 1666/7. Elisha died at Dorchester on 16 Oct 1682, and "Sarah ye Widdow of Elisha ffoster" was admitted to full communion on 3 (6) 1684. She married Ebenezer Wiswall in 1685 (Savage).
