- Heading: No. 16883; issued Oct. 3, 1894 (stamped “Passport Div., Oct 3 94”). State of Missouri, County of Jackson.
- Applicant: “I, Emil Charles Pfeiffer, a Native and Loyal Citizen of the United States, hereby apply … for a passport for myself.” The lines for people travelling with him are struck out.
- Born at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on or about 2 May 1865. His father “is a naturalized citizen.”
- Domiciled at Cambridge, Massachusetts, “where I follow the occupation of journalist.” He is “about to go abroad temporarily” and intends to return “on or about February 1st 1895.”
- Oath sworn 28 Sept 1894 before Gotthard [?] A. Henry [?], notary public, commission expiring January 28, 1895 [?]. Signed “Emil Chas. Pfeiffer.”
- Description: age 29; stature 6 feet 2¼ inches; forehead high; eyes dark brown; nose not large; mouth small; chin long; hair dark chestnut; complexion “sallow + tanned”; face oval.
- Identification, New York, Oct. 1, 1894: “I hereby certify that I know the above-named Emil Charles Pfeiffer personally, and know him to be a native-born citizen of the United States.” Witness Arthur F. Pfeiffer, “#15 Union Sq. N.Y. City, c/o Tiffany & Co.”

This was eight months into his “Paul Jones” walk, which set out from Boston in February 1894 to go
round the world in a year (newspapers-paul-jones-1894-1902). The oath was sworn at Kansas City
or nearby, in Jackson County, which fits the walk’s route west; the return date of 1 Feb 1895 fits
its year. Arthur F. Pfeiffer, who vouched for him in New York, shares the surname; how he was
related is not stated.
