What it says
Read 10 Oct 2026. Trent University Archives’ history of the firm: Andrew Jeffrey was a long-term resident of Cobourg, nominated an elder of the Presbyterian church in 1827 (Cobourg Early Days and Modern Times); elected to the Board of Police on the town’s incorporation in 1837; a member of the Board of Trade, which agreed that winter to close the shops at 7 pm; he “ran a Foundry and later a Hardware Store”; councillor in 1851 and mayor in 1852; and “in 1853 A. Jeffrey had his son-in-law, Robert Kingan, open a branch store in Peterborough.” Cobourg has a street named after him. (The page also mentions a private school at the corner of King and D’Arcy Streets; its connection with him is not clear from the summary.)
The Cobourg and District Historical Society’s list of mayors (https://cdhs.ca/mayors-of-cobourg/) has “Andrew Jeffrey, Mayor 1852,” with a portrait.
