What it says
Read in the Flynn research pass (research/dwyer/Flynn_Family_Connections.md, October 2026); the
flag report, the casualty listing and the burial were checked against the texts.
- Roster of the 6th Missouri Infantry, 4 Aug 1917, Company B (St. Joseph): “Flynn, Richard T.” among the corporals. Evan Alexander Edwards, From Doniphan to Verdun: The Official History of the 140th Infantry (1920); also Clair Kenamore, From Vauquois Hill to Exermont (1919), p. 299.
- Summer 1918, the Vosges (Edwards, “Alsatian Days in Quiet Trenches”): an American flag was raised on “the Old Stone House, known as Remi Farm, the house used by the snipers,” in No Man’s Land. The report came back: “The Flag Flies. ’Twas a narrow escape. The boys just got on the top of the house, and they must have been heard, for Jerry rained machine gun bullets all around them. The flag went up just the same.” Signed (SGT. R. T. FLYNN.) G. C. I Bis Commander. Sgt. Joseph Winslow and Cpl. Julius C. Hinkefent put it up.
- Official U.S. Bulletin, 21 Feb 1919, casualties reported by Gen. Pershing, under Sergeants: “FLYNN, Richard T. Mrs. Marie E. Flynn, 1919 Union St., St. Joseph, Mo.” (https://archive.org/details/officialusbulle5015unit_0).
- Army Navy Journal, 1941: Capt. Richard T. Flynn to the San Francisco Port of Embarkation, Fort Mason (29 Mar), and from Infantry to the Quartermaster Corps (23 Aug); service number O-261238 in the 1941 directory of reserve officers on active duty.
- Army Times, 24 Jul 1954: “Col. Richard T. Flynn, who last served as assistant IG of the Korea Communications Zone, has been assigned as acting IG of Fort Lewis. He served in Korea from February 1953 until May of this year.” 9 Apr 1955: post inspector general at Fort Lewis; a record for the Tacoma Archery Club.
- Official Army Register, 1962-1967: “FLYNN RICHARD T, COL, O-0261238, retired 31 10 57.”
- Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver: “Flynn, Richard T, b. 12/19/1897, d. 05/11/1996, US Army, COL,” and in the same grave “Flynn, Marie E, b. 04/16/1895, d. 01/14/1989, US Marine Corps” (https://interment.net/data/us/co/denver/logan/f/f04.htm).
No single record names his parents. That the sergeant of 1918 and the colonel are the St. Joseph son of William C. Flynn rests on the name, the town, the National Guard company, his birth (Dec 1897), his death (11 May 1996, Denver) and his wife Marie E.: probable.
