What it says

A screenshot of the photograph on Find a Grave, 10 Oct 2026 (photo 207332792, added by Debbie Rossi Scott):

IN LOVING MEMORY OF / JAMES HAY JR. / BORN OCT 4-1848 IN WOODSTOCK / DIED MAY 1-1912 / ISABELLA / WIFE OF JAMES HAY / DAUGHTER OF JOHN AND MARY SHORT / BORN IN NEWCASTLE ONT. / AUG. 1-1848 / DIED IN WOODSTOCK / JAN. 12-1924

The memorial gives her husband as James Geddes Hay III (1848-1912, married 1878) and a son, Thomas Lyall Hay (1879-1952).

What it shows:

  • Isabella was a daughter of John and Mary Short, born at Newcastle on 1 August 1848: a third record, after the marriage registration and death certificate of her brother John G., that puts John and Mary Short’s family at Newcastle in the 1840s.
  • Her son Thomas Lyall Hay carried the name Lyall, the maiden name of Mary Lyall, wife of William Jeffrey, whom the family accounts make Isabella’s grandmother.
