What it says
As given by the Dorchester Atheneum: “Here Lie Interr’d the Remains of Cap’tn Hopestill Foster Who Departed this Life October the 14th Anno Domini 1676 Aged 56 Years”. Blake’s Annals and Mollie’s typescript give 15 Oct.
Mollie’s “inscription” (“one of the leading men … a great loss to the town”) is the 1859 History of Dorchester commenting on the stone, not the stone itself.
The Atheneum (no. 23770) places the stone in the North Burying Ground, Dorchester, and does not say whether it is the original.
