What it says
Found on Ancestry, 9 Oct 2026. Read from the images:
- 1906 (image): “Holbrook Richard B capt str Perdita h 560 Mercer.”
- 1910 (image): “Holbrook … Richard B master Straits S S Co h 560 Mercer.”
- 1917 (image): “Holbrook … Harriet P (wid Richd B) r 3934 Warsaw” and “Richd B (Jessie L) master mariner h 8629 51st av S.”
“h” is a householder, “r” one who rooms or resides. Before about 1915 Polk’s Seattle directories
did not name a man’s wife, so Jessie’s absence in 1906 and 1910 says nothing. The 1910 directory
has Richard at 560 Mercer while the census of April 1910 has the family in Kitsap County
(census-1910-kitsap-county-holbrook): a mariner’s Seattle address and his family’s home could
differ. 8629 51st Avenue South, his “outside” address in his Pioneers of Alaska notice of Sept
1917 (newspaper-anchorage-weekly-times-1917-09-12), was his and Jessie’s home that year. The
later entries, 1918-1926, are in directories-seattle-holbrook-1918-1926.
