A lodging house headed by Millard V. Curtis (32, manager) and his wife Bertha (23, assistant manager), with two servants and about twenty lodgers. Read from the image by Claude, 11 Oct 2026.

Emil is not in the household. Most of the other lodgers worked in a printing house, a book bindery
or a metal shop (stenographer, proofreader, bookkeeper, book binder, craftsman), which fits the
Roycroft shops of Elbert Hubbard at East Aurora; the census does not name the employer. Frances had
written about Hubbard’s reading at Emerson College as a student in 1897, and probably again in 1898
(magazine-emerson-college-holbrook-1896-1904).
