What it says

Read in the archive.org full text (October 2026; research/mcmillan/Frost_Underhill_Bowne_Feake.md). Savage’s edition of Governor Winthrop’s journal, with his letters to his wife Margaret in the appendix.

  • The journal, 2 July 1630 (1:29): “My son Henry Winthrop was drowned at Salem.”
  • Winthrop to his wife, 16 July 1630 (appendix): “the Lord’s hand hath been heavy upon myself in some very near to me. My son Henry! my son Henry! ah, poor child! Yet it grieves me much more for my dear daughter. The Lord strengthen and comfort her heart, to bear this cross patiently. I know thou wilt not be wanting to her in this distress.” The “dear daughter” is Henry’s widow, Elizabeth (Fones) Winthrop, who had stayed at Groton.
