What it says

A typeset family genealogy compiled by Florence O’Connor. It is in copyright, so its pages in the Gallery are kept private.

  • Pp. iv-v reprint “A Letter from College of Arms, London, Dec. 29, 1953”: R. R. Graham-Vivian, M.C., Windsor Herald, to Bernice Aher. He searched the College’s records for the family and arms of Ellwood and found no Ellingwood at all (“quite probably … a variation of Ellwood which has come about on the American side”). The only arms of the name were granted to a Sarah Ellwood in 1774, and he ends that “unless you know the part of England from which Ralph came it is almost hopeless.” Mrs. Aher’s covering note to Vernon Ellingwood: “it looks like we have no claim to Coat of Arms.” Avis Ellingwood of West Paris, Maine, had the original.
  • P. 3 (the same book, confirmed October 2026):
    • Ralph’s home “said to be at what is now the junction of Congress and Porter Streets, Beverly”;
    • a hand-drawn map of Beverly with his lot, 31, at the point by the Salem ferry;
    • “Ralph and Ellen’s Children, Second Gen.” with their dates from Perley’s History of Salem, vol. 3, p. 334;
    • a note that Stone (p. 113) gives Ralph’s baptism as 26 Apr 1657 and names a daughter Sarah, 7 Aug 1666.
