What it says

The standard Cummings genealogy, and the source Kith and Kin (1922) names for its Cummings line. Read in the archive.org full text in October 2026 to check that line.

  • Isaac Cummings (pp. 1-3): on a list of the commoners of Ipswich, 31 Dec 1641; a planting lot in “Reedy Marsh” as early as July 1638; later of Topsfield, constable 1666, aged 65 in a deposition that year, deacon, moderator of the town meeting in 1676. “No mention remains of his wife nor of her name.” His will of 8 May 1677, printed in full, confirms land “to my son Isaac,” gives legacies to “my son, John Juet” and “my son, John Pease,” and ends: “I doe make my son John my sole executor and doe give unto him my house and lands.” His son John, “born about 1630,” testified in 1679 to being 50.
  • Samuel Cummings (p. 22), son of John and grandson of John and Isaac, “married, Jan. 14, 1708-9, Elizabeth Shed, in Charlestown … She and Jerahmeel Boyden, both of Groton, were appointed administrators of her husband’s estate in 1718 … Elisabeth Cummings, widow, married Jan. 23, 1720, Robert Robbins of Littleton. Children recorded in Groton: Samuel, born Mar. 6, 1709 … Jerahmeel, born Oct. 10, 1711 … James, born July 14, 1713.” Mooar gives Samuel no son Leonard.
  • Leonard Cummins, of Litchfield, N.H. (pp. 478-479), among the Cummingses Mooar could not place: “Leonard Cummins is mentioned Nov. 20, 1739, by Josiah Cummings, administrator of Eleazer Cummings’ estate. He sold land, 1742, in Litchfield, N. H.; at least he was of that town then. His wife’s name was Jane and appears to have been of Dunstable. He died in 1758 in Londonderry, N. H. Joel Parkhurst was appointed guardian of the children, Jerahmeel, Rachel and Silas, the last under 14 years.” Children: “Jerahmeel, born —, 1750; married Apr. 30, 1771, Deborah Kendall, perhaps daughter of John and Hannah Kendall, of Dunstable; if so, born May 13, 1751. In a notice of the Hon. Amos Kendall, it is mentioned that in 1807 he visited his Aunt Cummings in Windsor, Vt., who had two sons, who took their cousin up Ascutney mountain. In a record at Amherst, N. H., two children were born to Jonathan (Jerahmeel may be) and Deborah Cummings. 1. Deborah, born Mar. 28, 1772. 2. Leonard, born June 2, 1773”; Rachel, b. 1752; Silas, b. 1754. Their son Leonard “married Lydia Spencer in Windsor, Vt.,” and died 25 June 1854, aged 81; his grandson Cyrus R. Cummins “has been told that his great-grandfather stole away from Ireland in a ship and was concealed many days.”
