What it says
Printed abstracts of the Massachusetts Revolutionary War service records, read in the archive.org full text (vol. 9 at the link). Used for the Low family:
- “Low, Nathan, Boxford. Private, Capt. Jacob Gould’s co. of militia, Col. Samuel Johnson’s regt., which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775; service, 4 days” (9:1030).
- Capt. David Low (bp. 5 May 1728, son of David and Susanna): “Lieutenant, Capt. Jonathan Cogswell, Jr.’s co., which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775”; captain 1776; “Captain of a company of volunteers … marched Oct. 2, 1777; discharged Nov. 7, 1777; … under Gen. Gates in Northern department, and in guarding Gen. Burgoyne’s army to Prospect Hill” (9:1021).
- Major Caleb Low (1739-1810, of Danvers): captain of a company on the alarm of 19 Apr 1775; captain 1776; chosen 1st Major in Col. Larkin Thorndike’s regiment 4 Mar 1778; “Major, Col. Nathaniel Wade’s regt.; engaged July 6, 1780; discharged Oct. 10, 1780” (9:1020).
Used for the Tyler and Read families of Attleborough (vol. 13 at https://archive.org/details/massachusettssol13mass; vol. 16 at https://archive.org/details/massachusettssol16mass):
- Ebenezer Tyler (16:230-231): private in Capt. Jabez Ellis’s company, which marched on the alarm of 19 April 1775 (9 days); sergeant in Capt. Jacob Ide’s company on the Rhode Island alarm of 8 Dec 1776 (17 days); 1st lieutenant, commissioned 22 Dec 1777; almost three months at Rhode Island in a regiment raised from 1 Jan 1778 to serve under Gen. Spencer; twice marched to Tiverton, R.I., on alarms in late July and early August 1780. A Lieutenant Ebenezer Tyler, no town given, claimed wages and rations as “a supernumerary officer in Col. Jacobs’s regt. at Rhode Island” from 1 May to 12 Oct 1778, allowed one ration a day until 1 August and two after (account dated 18 Jan 1779, 16:231).
- The Read entries (vol. 13): David and Joel Read of Attleborough in Capt. Jabez Ellis’s company on the Lexington alarm (11 days); Joel enlisted 1 May 1775 in Capt. Caleb Richardson’s company at Roxbury and rose to sergeant; Peter Read a corporal on the Rhode Island alarm of Dec 1776; a Daniel Read of Attleborough in three short stints in 1777-78, two of them at Rhode Island.
Used for the Holbrook family of Wellfleet (vol. 8, https://archive.org/details/masssoldiers08bostrich):
- An Elisha Holbrook of Wellfleet in Capt. Winslow Lewis’s company at Cambridge in 1775-76, and a gunner and bombardier in Col. Crafts’s artillery regiment in 1776-77 (8:76-77). Deacon Elisha Holbrook (b. 1716) would then have been about 60, so this is probably his son Elisha (b. about 1748). The Wellfleet Holbrooks in the rolls are Elisha, Eliphalet and Ezekiel; no service was found for Gideon Holbrook (c. 1765-1842).
Used for the Ellis family of Middleborough and Plymouth (vol. 5, as abstracted in the Freeman-Ellis research; that each man is the Ellis of the family is the research’s inference):
- “ELLES, MATTHIAS, Middleborough. Private, Capt. Nehemiah Allen’s co., Col. Theophilus Cotton’s regt.; service, 31 days, on a secret expedition to Rhode Island in Sept. and Oct., 1777.” Matthias Ellis (b. 1719/20) would then have been 57.
- George Ellis: marched from Plymouth to Bristol, R.I., 11 Dec 1776, in Capt. Robert Finney’s company, Col. Lothrop’s regiment, 10 days (5:303); Capt. Nathaniel Goodwin’s company, “on a secret expedition against Newport, R. I.,” Sept-Oct 1777.
- Joseph Ellis: corporal in Capt. Nathaniel Wood’s Middleborough minute company on the Lexington alarm, April 1775 (marched to Marshfield); the Rhode Island alarm, Dec 1776; the Dartmouth alarm, Sept 1778.
- Cornelius Ellis: Capt. Job Peirce’s company, 30 days at Rhode Island, Oct 1777.
- Ebenezer and Gamaliel Ellis: enlisted together 20 June 1775 in Capt. Josiah King’s company, Col. David Brewer’s regiment; at Roxbury in Dec 1775; Ebenezer, as sergeant, signed a ration receipt “on march from Dorchester to New York,” dated New York 29 Apr 1776; later at Rhode Island (1777) and Tiverton (1780).
- Daniel Ellis: Camp at Hull, June-Dec 1776; Rhode Island 1777, 1780 and 1781; Col. Abijah Stearns’s “regt. of guards,” 14 Apr-2 July 1778, “at and about Boston.”
For John Holdershaw of Eastham (research/ellingwood/Ellingwood_Cape_Cod.md): “Holdershaw, John (also
given John, Sr.). Corporal, Capt. Solomon Higgins’s (Eastham) co.; enlisted July 13, 1775; discharged
Dec. 31, 1775 … also, Sergeant, Capt. Samuel King’s co.; company order for wages dated Hull, June 20,
1776; also, petition dated Camp at Hull, Sept. 17, 1776, signed by said Holdershaw and others belonging
to battalion stationed at Hull, asking for increase and payment of wages” (8:115); “Haldershaw, John,
