What it says

Read through the archive.org text in the Ellingwood kin research (research/ellingwood/Ellingwood_Kin_Connections.md, October 2026); the passages below were checked.

  • Thomas Hichborn (1673-1731): his widow Frances’s will (10 Sept 1742, proved 26 Dec 1749) “appointed her son Thomas and sons-in-law Paul Revere and Philip Merritt executors” and made bequests “to son Thomas” and “to daughter Deborah Revere.” Their children: Deborah, b. 25 Jan 1703, who married Paul Revere Sr., “the parents of the famous Paul Revere, patriot”; and Thomas, b. 30 June 1708.
  • Thomas Hichborn (1708-1776) married Isanna (Hannah) Fadry; children baptized at the Brick Church, the first “Robert, baptized March 28, 1742.”
  • “Robert Hichborn, son of Thomas Hichborn (5), was baptized March 28, 1742, in Boston. He was a soldier in the revolution, lieutenant in Captain Jonathan Stoddard’s company, Colonel Henry Bromfield’s regiment, 1777; married, July 16, 1765, Susannah Ellenwood. He was a ship-builder by trade. He removed from Boston after the revolution and established a shipyard at Stockton, Maine, where he died, 1800.” One of his ships was lost on her way to Boston with two of his daughters aboard. Children include Robert Jr., Philip, William, Susannah, Paul Revere, Henry and Deborah.
  • Philip Hichborn, “son of Robert Hichborn (6), was born in Boston about 1768,” a cooper and later a master; his son Philip (1805-1889), shipwright at the Charlestown Navy Yard; and his son, Admiral Philip Hichborn, born at Charlestown 4 Mar 1839.

Paul Revere was therefore a first cousin of Robert Hichborn, Susanna Ellingwood’s husband.
