Delayed certificate of birth of Mollie Frances Holbrook, born 4 Dec 1870, filed at Island County 17 May 1930

A Washington State Board of Health certificate of birth made out sixty years after the event, marked “#1” and stamped “FILED MAY 17 1930, R. C. Maylor [?], County Clerk.” Read from the Archives’ two-page PDF by Claude, 11 Oct 2026.

• Place: County of Island; town of Coveland; place of birth “Penn’s Cove, or Coveland, (San de Fuca).”
• Child: Mollie Frances Holbrook; girl; single birth; legitimate; born Dec 4, 1870.
• Father: Richard Blackmer Holbrook, of Coveland, Whidby Island; white; born Plymouth, Massachusetts; farmer.
• Mother: Harriet Phillips Low, of Coveland, Whidby Island; born Deer Isle, Maine; occupation “Mother.” Number of this child: “?”; children of this mother now living: two.
• No physician or midwife signed.

Page 2, affidavit. “Horace Holbrook, of Coupeville, Washington, being first duly sworn, on his oath deposes and says: that he was born on January 3rd, A.D. 1863, and is a brother of Mollie Frances Holbrook whose birth is reported on the attached Certificate of Birth; that he has prepared and furnished the information given in the Certificate of Birth hereto attached; that the facts therein stated are within his own knowledge and are true as therein given.” Signed Horace Holbrook; sworn 17 May 1930 before James Zylstra [?], notary public at Coupeville.

So the date rests on Horace’s word in 1930, when he was 67 and she 59. The territorial census of April 1871 (census-1871-island-county-holbrook) has her aged 3/12, born within the year in January.
