What it says

Found 10 Oct 2026, from the scans and their text.

  • 23 Mar 1928, p. 4: “Uncle Sam’s First and Last Camel Caravan,” on the U.S. Army’s camels in the deserts of the Southwest, printed as “Special Correspondence.” Two sources give it to her: the bibliography to A. A. Gray’s article on the camels in the California Historical Society Quarterly, vol. 9 no. 4 (Dec 1930), p. 341 (“PFEIFFER, Frances H. Uncle Sam’s First and Last Camel Caravan over Western Deserts. Christian Science Monitor. March 23, 1928”), and The American Philatelist, vol. 42, p. 637 (about June 1929), which reprinted part of it as “The Camel Express. By Frances H. Pfeiffer.”
  • 2 Jan 1929: a letter to the editor signed “Los Angeles, Calif. FRANCES HOLBROOK PFEIFFER,” seen only as a search snippet; it ends “…helping to build across our borders.”
  • 10 Dec 1929, p. 20: “Kindness to Animals 400 Years Ago,” a letter to the editor signed the same way, quoting Montaigne’s essay on hunting.
  • Sept to Nov 1932: “Mrs. Frances H. Pfeiffer, Los Angeles” in the Monitor’s lists of readers sending perfect answers to its “Rime-O-Grams” verse puzzle.
