Encyclopedia article on Elder William Brewster (c. 1566/67-1644), “senior elder and the leader of Plymouth Colony.” Born in 1566 or 1567, most likely at Scrooby, Nottinghamshire; at Peterhouse, Cambridge, from 1580; in the service of William Davison from 1584; postmaster at Scrooby from 1590, where the Separatist church of Robinson and Clifton met in the manor house; at Leiden he taught English to university students and printed books proscribed in England (“seven books against the regime of the Church of England in 1618 alone”), among them Perth Assembly (1619), which King James ordered seized. He came on the Mayflower in 1620 and was the colony’s religious leader. Four outer islands of Boston Harbor (Great, Little, Middle and Outer Brewster) bear his name; in 1632 he removed to Duxbury. “About 1590 or 1592, William Brewster married a woman named Mary,” whose surname is unknown; she died in April 1627. Children: Jonathan (12 Aug 1593-7 Aug 1659), who “married Lucretia Oldham of Derby on 10 April 1624”; Patience, who married Thomas Prence; Fear, who married Isaac Allerton; an unnamed child buried at Leiden in 1609; Love (who married Sarah Collier in 1634); and Wrestling. He died on 10 April 1644 at Duxbury.
