Encyclopedia article on Philip Delano (Philippe de Lannoy, 1603-1681/2) of Plymouth and Duxbury. His parents, Jean de Lannoy of Tourcoing and Marie Mahieu of Lille, were Protestants from Flanders who “fled religious persecution by the Spanish around 1579”; he was baptised in the Walloon church at Leiden on 7 Dec 1603, came on the Fortune in November 1621 as a single man, and may first have lived with his uncle, the Mayflower passenger Francis Cooke. Freeman by 1633; volunteered for the Pequot War in 1637 and granted 40 acres at Duxbury on 2 Oct 1637; “appointed surveyor, but was deposed in 1641.” Married (1) Hester Dewsbury, 19 Dec 1634; (2) Mary (Pontus) Glass, 17 Jan 1653/4, by whom he had Jane, Rebecca and Samuel. Franklin D. Roosevelt descends from his son Jonathan, of the first marriage. Gives the death of his daughter Rebecca (Delano) Churchill as 7 Apr 1709.
