What it says

Encyclopedia article on John Tilley (1571-1620/1) of Henlow, Bedfordshire, and his family. Gives his baptism at Henlow, 19 Dec 1571, eldest child of Robert and Elizabeth Tilley; his marriage there on 20 Sept 1596 to Joan (Hurst) Rogers, widow of Thomas Rogers, whom she had married on 18 June 1593 and by whom she had a daughter Joan, baptised 26 May 1594; Joan Hurst’s baptism, 13 Mar 1567/8, younger daughter of William Hurst. Says John and his brother Edward were of the Leiden congregation and signed the Mayflower Compact. From Banks (1929): the will of George Clarke (22 Sept 1607) notes a debt of Thomas Kirke to him, and on 7 Apr 1613 “John Tilley, yeoman,” of Wootton, Bedfordshire, aged 40, gave sworn evidence. Notes that his son Robert was apprenticed in Bedfordshire in October 1617, which puts in doubt how long the family lived at Leiden. Gives Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland’s baptism at Henlow, 30 Aug 1607.
