Encyclopedia article on John Foster (1648-1681), son of Capt. Hopestill Foster of Dorchester, Harvard 1667, who opened Boston’s first printing office in 1675. It credits him with the woodcut portrait of Richard Mather and the 1677 “White Hills” map of New England, counted among the first portrait and the first map printed in the English colonies.
