What it says
Read 10 Oct 2026. The archives’ history of the newspaper: the Woodstock Sentinel was begun on 1 Jan 1854 by John McWhinnie and Sandy Hay as a Reform weekly; the McWhinnies ran it until 1870, when George Pattullo took over its management and editorship; the Woodstock Review first appeared on 1 Oct 1870; the two were joined as the Sentinel-Review in 1878 [as the page has it]; George ran the paper until 1880, “when he became chief Liberal organizer for Ontario,” and the sole proprietorship passed to his brother Andrew; Andrew became the first president of the Ontario Good Roads Association in 1894 and was elected member for Oxford North in 1896; in 1901 a joint stock company took control, with William Taylor of the Montreal Herald as president and managing editor.
Doors Open Woodstock, “Museum Square” (https://www.doorsopenontario.on.ca/woodstock/museum-square): the fountain in the centre of Museum Square, before the Woodstock Museum, was bought with a bequest from Andrew Pattullo; it was tested on 4 Dec 1916 and formally opened on 29 May 1917.
George Robson Pattullo and Andrew Pattullo were brothers of Mary (Pattullo) Short.
