Thomas Ellis

Born in 1728/9, probably a son of Joel Ellis and Elizabeth Churchill and a brother of Matthias Ellis. In 1759 he was living on his father's homestead in the Twenty-six Men's Purchase at Middleborough, Massachusetts, which was then given to him and his brother Charles. Probably the Thomas Ellis who, by tradition, heard the news of Lexington in 1775 and sent his son in his place.

Notes

Brother of Matthias Ellis (b. 1719/20). Living on his father’s homestead in 1759 (“whereon my said son Thomas Ellis now Dwells”), when it was given to him and his brother Charles.

Probably the Thomas Ellis of a story in Weston’s “Eddy Note-Book” material [tradition]: on 19 Apr 1775 Caleb Bryant brought him the news of Lexington, “riding in great haste over fences and fields”; Ellis “took down his gun to repair it, put a long handle to his hatchet,” but “did not go, however, but sent his son soon after.” The lieutenant of the son’s company called to men who were dodging, “Don’t! don’t! I will tell you when to dodge.” The identification is the research’s inference.
