Margaret Tod

Also Margaret Lowe

Probably the first wife of Thomas Low of Ipswich, Massachusetts: a Margaret Tod married Thomas Lowe at Polstead, Suffolk, on 22 June 1630, and a Thomas and Margaret Lowe had sons Thomas and John baptized at Groton in 1631 and at Boxford, Suffolk, in 1633. She was perhaps the mother of his son Thomas, and probably died before about 1636.

Notes

Married Thos. Lowe at Polstead, Suffolk, 22 June 1630. A son Thomas, “son of Thomas & Margaret Lowe,” was baptized at Groton 8 May 1631, and John, son of Thomas and Margaret, at Boxford, Suffolk, 2 Mar 1633. Wm. G. Low and V. B. Redstone think it “a probability” that this couple were Thomas Low of Ipswich and his first wife.

The Low master research rates her marriage to the Ipswich Thomas probable and infers that she died before about 1636 (research/low/Low_Master_Research.md, section 129). His widow in 1677 was Susannah.

Open questions

  • Was she the wife of Thomas Low of Ipswich, and when did she die? The colonial tree says she died before the emigration, Thomas marrying (2) Susannah; no record of her death has been found.
Mollie's typescript· 2 passages · 3 claims checked

What Mollie wrote about her in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about her checked against the records.

  1. Mollie gives her marriage to Thomas Low on 22 June 1630 and says she died in England before he married again.

and Magaret Tod were married June 22, 1630. She died in England, and he married 2nd. Susannah whose name was in the old Bible

  2. Following William G. Low, Mollie thinks Margaret's sister Sara married Robert Choate, which would make the boy John Choate, who came over as Thomas Low's "servant," her nephew.

it seems most probable that it was Margaret Tod's sister Sara who married Robert Choate the father of little John.

Checked against the records

  • Possible
Thomas Low came from Polstead, Suffolk, near Assington

Probable. Polstead has "Thos. Lowe & Margaret Tod married 22 June 1630," followed by sons Thomas (Groton, 1631) and John (Boxford, 1633), the names of the Ipswich family's eldest children. William G. Low and V. B. Redstone called the identification "a probability," and no record yet proves it.

  • Possible
Deacon Thomas Low was baptized at Groton on 8 May 1631

Groton has "Thomas Lowe, son of Thomas & Margaret Lowe bapt. 8 May, 1631"; it does not give her surname. His ages, "about thirty-seven" in 1669 and 80 at his death in 1712, fit, but a deposition of 1676 makes him about 36. NEHGR 174 (2020) may settle it.

  • Possible
Thomas Low brought young John Choate over as his servant

William G. Low (1909) quotes the Choate genealogy: John Choate was "brought over by Mr. Low," and was probably the John baptized at Groton, Suffolk, on 6 June 1624, so about twelve in 1636. The kinship Low suspected, through a sister of Margaret Tod, is his own conjecture and unproven.
