Joseph Humphrey

A farmer and Baptist deacon, born in Windham County, Connecticut, in 1782, probably a son of Ebenezer Humphrey and Lucy Robbins. He probably married Hannah Enos about 1802 and settled at Marcellus, New York, then moved through western New York and in 1839 to Richmond township, Walworth County, Wisconsin; he died at Whitewater. Probably the father of Caroline (Humphrey) Adams and of Capt. Jasper Humphrey, the Great Lakes captain.

Notes

Caroline (Humphrey) Adams’s father. “He was a farmer for many years, Deacon of the Baptist Church, and a man generally respected and beloved” (source, from his son Capt. Jasper Humphrey’s information). He married Hannah Enos about 1802 and settled at Marcellus, New York, where her brother Joseph lived, then in Steuben (Danville), Ontario (Richmond) and Chautauqua (Ripley) counties, and in 1839 at Richmond township, Walworth County, Wisconsin, where he was elected a supervisor at the first town meeting in 1842. He died at Whitewater. Two sons went to sea: Elias, a seaman, died at Detroit in 1836 aged 18, and Capt. Jasper Humphrey became a Great Lakes captain, a Wisconsin assemblyman and harbor master of Milwaukee.

His father, Ebenezer Humphrey of Windham County, Connecticut, “may belong” to the Oxford, Massachusetts, family (Humphreys, 1883); the family is not Michael Humphrey’s of Windsor and Simsbury, nor Jonas Humphrey’s of Dorchester.
