A lodging house headed by Millard V. Curtis (32, manager) and his wife Bertha (23, assistant manager), with two servants and about twenty lodgers. Read from the image by Claude, 11 Oct 2026.
| Name | Relation | Age | Married | Born | Father | Mother | Occupation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pfeiffer, Frances H. | lodger | 39 | M1, 11 years; 1 child, 1 living | Washington | Massachusetts | Maine | correspondent, printing house; wage earner; not out of work |
| Pfeiffer, Alice P. | lodger | 10 | single | Washington | New Hampshire | Washington |
Emil is not in the household. Most of the other lodgers worked in a printing house, a book bindery or a metal shop (stenographer, proofreader, bookkeeper, book binder, craftsman), which fits the Roycroft shops of Elbert Hubbard at East Aurora; the census does not name the employer. Frances had written about Hubbard's reading at Emerson College as a student in 1897, and probably again in 1898 (Emerson College Magazine, 1896-1904: writings by M. Frances Holbrook and notes on Mrs. Frances Holbrook Pfeiffer).
