Thomas's history of American printers (first published 1810), in the second edition with later editors' notes, read in the archive.org full text. Used for Samuel Kneeland (1697-1769), brother of Rachel (Kneeland) Foster: he "served an apprenticeship with Bartholomew Green" and was "for a great length of time, printer to the governor and council." Thomas says Kneeland and his partner Green printed "an edition of the Bible in small 4to. This was the first Bible printed, in America, in the English language," with a false London imprint; the editor's note says the historian Bancroft questioned this (1:105-109).
For King Philip's War (research/king-philips-war/), on James Printer (Wowaus) of Hassanamesit: "In 1659,
he was put apprentice to Samuel Green, printer"; he worked as a pressman on the first Indian Bible and "left
his master secretly, and joined his brethren in arms" (1:95-96); he set the second Indian Bible with Green
in 1680, and the Psalter of 1709 was "Printed by B. Green and J. Printer" (1:97-98). Thomas supposed John
Foster "must have well known James, who lived with Green when Foster was at college" (1:97), a guess.
