- summary
- Wife of Joseph Woodworth of Scituate, Massachusetts, a shopkeeper and son of Walter Woodworth, whom she married in 1669, and mother of eight children born there, probably among them Joseph Woodworth. She was probably a daughter of John Stockbridge, who built the grist mill on the First Herring Brook, and his second wife, the widow Elizabeth Soan; one account makes her a daughter of his son Charles.

- note
- John Stockbridge's will of 1657 left "To daughter Sarah 10£ at marriage, or at 21 years of age," and Deane's Stockbridge sketch (p. 342) makes her the Sarah born 1645 who married Joseph Woodworth in 1669. That the will's Sarah is Joseph Woodworth's wife is the inference. The Woodworth Records (1898), and Deane's own Woodworth sketch (p. 392), call her "daughter of Charles Stockbridge, who kept the mill"; but Charles's daughter Sarah was born in 1665 and married Israel Turner (Deane, p. 343), and his first known child was born in 1660. So John is the better reading.

- "Widow Elizabeth Soan, (mother of William)," John Stockbridge's second wife from 1643; her maiden name is not known.
Sarah's father, very probably John Stockbridge of Scituate, built the grist mill on the First Herring Brook and the Stockbridge house, which her half-brother Charles inherited. In 1669 (6 January, by the Woodworth Records) she married Joseph Woodworth, son of Walter Woodworth of Scituate; Deane adds "a shop-keeper" after his name (source).
King Philip's War. When Scituate was attacked on 20 May 1676, the house her father had built, now her half-brother Charles's, was the town's main garrison: "The garrison house of Stockbridge was pallisadoed on three sides, the fourth being defended by the mill pond ... Here the Indians fought several hours" (Deane pp. 126-127). That July the colony's council of war allowed land to "Charlse Stockbridge, for Benjamine Woodworth," her husband's brother (Records of the Colony of New Plymouth 5:206). The family histories say Benjamin was killed in the war, but he probably came through it: a Benjamin Woodworth sat with her husband on a Scituate jury entered at the court of 6 Mar 1676/7 (PCR 5:227; see Walter Woodworth).
Her children, born at Scituate (Deane; the Woodworth Records): Joseph, 19 March 1670; Mary, 1673, who married Stephen Vinal Jr. in 1704; Benjamin, 1676; Sarah, 1678; Elizabeth, 1680; Eunice, 1682/3; Abigail, 1685, wife of Thomas Merritt; and Ruth, 1687/8, wife of Benjamin Sylvester Jr. (source).
